The Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, the composer's birthplace, is internationally renowned for its innovative stagings and musically impeccable productions. This colourful and exuberant production was staged by Daminano Michieletto, “one of the truly new voices in stage direction today” (L’Unita). Michieletto made his international debut at the Wexford Opera Festival in 2003 with a highly-acclaimed production of Weinberger's Svanda Dudák, named Opera Production of the Year by the Irish Times. Claudio Scimone, a key figure in the international Rossini Renaissance, conducts the Orchestra di Bolzano e Trento and leads a cast of Rossini specialists including Daniele Zanfardino, Olga Peretyatko and Anna Malavasi.Press Reviews
"The cast is uniformly good. With her film-star looks and shiny top register, Olga Peretyatko has a lot of fun as Giulia, Carlo Lepore shows off as the vacuous Blansac, Jose Manuel Zapata makes an engaging Dorvil, and Paolo Bordogna proves an expert clown in the buffo role of Germano." (BBC Music Magazine ★★★★)
"The most appealing member of the cast is Olga Peretyatko as young Giulia, who is exceptionally attractive... and sings with a lyric sheen, until her soprano gets fluttery at the very top. Jose Manuel Zapata's tenor brings a Mediterranean warmth to the role of Dorvil...The authoritative presence of Claudio Scimone in the pit is a plus, ensuring a clean-cut Rossini style " (Gramophone)Cast

11, 2016, Rivero was driving a pickup truck through the Mariposa Port of Entry toward Mexico when a spare tire fell from under the truck approximately 75 yards from the border. Rivero reportedly stopped the truck and tried to pick up the tire, but couldn’t. During an interview following his arrest, Rivero reportedly told investigators that he had expected to be paid $500 to transport the ammunition hidden in the spare tire from the United States to Mexico. However, in a pre-sentence memorandum, defense lawyer Christopher Scileppi cited evidence at trial showing that Rivero did not know that the spare tire contained ammunition, and instead thought it contained “a different type of contraband. After completing an eight-year prison sentence in that case, Rivero was convicted on Jan. 20, 2009, at Santa Cruz County Superior Court of attempted kidnapping and sentenced to 4. 5 years in prison. In August 2009, Rivero was convicted in federal court of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute approximately 274 kilograms of marijuana after he and three other men were busted with the load in May 2008 at a home in the Monte Carlo... This book traces the rise and fall of the joust in Iberia, between the late fourteenth and late sixteenth centuries, when it was supplanted by the more innocuous cane game and the spectacle of the bull-run. It focuses on three jousting treatises written by practising champions at the time: Ponc de Menaguerra's Lo Cavaller (`The Knight', 1493); Juan Quijada de Reayo's Doctrina del arte de la cavalleria (`Doctrine of the Art of Chivalry, 1548); and Luiz Zapata's Del Justador (`Of the Jouster', c.1589-93). It presents editions, with the first English translation, of these important texts, together with introductions and analytical study; there are also chapters on the arms and armour of the joust. It is richly illustrated with nearly 200 colour and black and white illustrations, many never previously published, which illuminate the sometimes complex technical terminology used by these authors, and provide further evidence of how weapons and armour were actually used. Noel Fallows is Professor of Spanish and Associate Dean, University of Georgia.
