“Mike Wood is Massachusetts' answer to Carl Hiaasen. Alchemy is a great and funny tale of wayward manatees, love, fatherhood and pirate treasures, not necessarily in that order.” – AJ Jacobs, bestselling author of The Know-It All

When a migrating manatee makes a prolonged stop off the coast of Cape Cod, his unexpected arrival (and the beautiful daughter of the marine biologist who is following him) sets into motion a charming chain of events that will result in 15-year old Al learning the truth about his missing father, the joy and pain of first love, and ultimately even the fate of Hugh Manatee!

The summer of 1984 was a golden time in America. From California, where gymnast Mary Lou Retton was winning Olympic gold, to Cape Cod, where explorer Barry Clifford was discovering pirate gold, the nation seemed obsessed with the precious metal. But for 15-year old Al, that obsession hits a little too close to home when he finds a code-filled notebook belonging to his missing father that may contain the ancient formula for turning lead to gold. Convinced that his father’s sudden disappearance is connected to his secret experiments in alchemy, Al sets out to find the truth. He enlists the help of Cammie, a beautiful girl staying for the summer while her marine biologist father tracks a wayward manatee, and together they begin unraveling the mystery. But the closer they get to an answer, the closer they grow to each other, and as the end of summer draws nearer, Al wonders if they can break the code without breaking his heart.

Our months in Mexico

Planning for things that don’t come to fruition- whether social or professional- has been part of life here, but sometimes it’s allowed us to get out and experience more of this really fun city. We recently finished two weeks of really great visits, first with friends and then with our moms, as Oaxaca has shared all of its vibrancy with us- from the great music and culture to the marches and political protest that have reached a crescendo... In the first visit, four friends visited and the six of us explored Oaxaca and took a tour of Monte Alban, the Zapotec ruins just outside of the town with Jorge, an English professor who has become a good friend. We also saw a baseball game, went to El Tule (an incredibly cute town with the world’s widest tree. ) and Teotitlan del Valle where Liz and I have been teaching English to kids after school hours twice a week and a town known for their amazing textiles made with natural colors. After Oaxaca we traveled out to Puebla, which is known for two things- a deliciously sweet mole (traditional sauce in Oaxaca and Puebla made from nuts, spices and occasionally chocolate), and beautiful tiles- the ones you might see in a Mexican... Oaxaca is a beautiful colonial city, but one of the poorest places in all of Mexico as a state. When you make your way north towards Mexico City, the increasing wealth is clear. From there we traveled on to Teotihuacan, the famous Aztec pyramids which were totally breathtaking, and then to Mexico City (aka D. F. ). Mexico City is a fun an interesting place and I’m always taken by the amazingly beautiful parks and green... It was a fast-paced 8 days and I came down with a nasty cold to show for it, but it was so awesome spending time with Micah, Rebecca, Paul and Mike here in Mexico. With just two days of recovery time we rested up and our moms arrived together to Oaxaca on June 2nd. It’s great that they traveled together and the four of us really enjoyed being together. This trip was a different one- we did a lot of shopping (mainly for alebrijes- the Oaxacan wood carved animals that are elaborately painted) and strolling around Oaxaca which was very relaxing. After a few days in and around town we took off for the Sierra Norte mountains outside of town that are dotted with incredibly. Source: Scott Goldstein
