Flicka -- nonhuman star of the one-season wonder "My Friend Flicka" (1956-57) -- is one smart horse. Even when her participation in a given episode is peripheral, Flicka manages to save the day. Flicka (played by Wahana ) lives on the Goose Bar Ranch in Wyoming at the turn of the century -- that is, the 20th century. And she only allows one person to ride her: young redheaded Ken McLaughlin ( Johnny Washbrook ), her "owner. Factory is the DVD set "My Friend Flicka: The Complete Series" ($19. 99), 39 color episodes on five discs. Ken's father Rob ( Gene Evans ) is strict but fair, owing to his former status as a captain in the U. S. Cavalry. To this day, folks still call him "Captain. " Ken's mom Nell ( Anita Louise ) is a petite blonde who is a tad more sophisticated than the average rancher's wife in the region -- she was educated in Philadelphia -- not that she puts on airs. Nell is neighborly and, perhaps, a bit nosey. Rounding out the (human) inhabitants of the Goose Bar Ranch is old Gus ( Frank Ferguson ). Gus is a strong, silent type who is all about the work, speaks in a thick Swedish accent and is prone to old-world superstitions. Gus doesn't act like a tough guy, but when the occasion arises, the codger can stand his ground. (It was harder to find love in the Old West than it is these days, what with eHarmony, Match. For a shortlived "boy and his horse" series filmed largely on location, "My Friend Flicka" had some impressive guest stars. Hugh Beaumont is all icy charm as a killer who steals Flicka in the pilot. Ma Joad herself, Jane Darwell , plays the sweet granny of one of Ken's friends. Guinn "Big Boy" Williams , who you see in John Wayne and Errol Flynn movies, plays a blacksmith in a couple of episodes. Claude Akins threatens the Captain as a hillbilly who claims Flicka and attempts to brand her. Beaumont's fellow "Leave it to Beaver" cast member Tiger Fafara plays a chum of Ken's. More guests are John Carradine, Mike Mazurki, Minerva Urecal and Denver Pyle. "My Friend Flicka" is heartwarming, wholesome and family-friendly -- qualities that are hard to find in the Kardashian Age. Source:
