Morning Encircle
Product Description
As frontman for platinum Canadian angst-rockers Moist, David Usher seems to bear the weight of the world on his shoulders. Morning Orbit gives us an Usher who is looser and poppier. The dreamy, diaphanous opener, "How Are You," and "A Day in the Life" are the songs most likely to land him in Beatles Court, while "Too Close to the Sun" and the lush single "Alone in the Universe" only momentarily recall the guitar bluster of his band. Usher and his production team, including members of Moist, pull out all the stops on "Black Black Heart," which mixes an opera sample, guest vocalist Julia Galios, and scratchy programming.

Aided and abetted by Canadian rapper Snow, Usher offers a semblance of new jack swing in the late-night vibe of "Joy in Small Places." The disc's full melodies and studio-tweaked successes are sometimes offset by the singer's pretensions, though. A line in "How Are You" about "another struggle just to get through nine to five" is laughable coming from a guy who hasn't had a day job in years, while a cover of Tracy Chapman's dead-end-lives portrait "Fast Car" only serves to remind listeners of the vastly superior original. And, in "Butterfly," Usher's tendency to over-emote sinks an otherwise delicate, acoustic guitar-based number. But those who can overlook such foibles--and, judging by the success of Moist, there are many--will find much to like about Morning Orbit. --Shawn Conner

Firmino stars vs. Leicester as Mane and Lallana also impress for Liverpool - ESPN FC (blog)

There was a lot to feel good about for Liverpool fans as their team ran riot in attacking areas. Roberto Firmino caught the eye especially, not just for his two goals but his all-around contribution, which was wonderful. Liverpool are a team that struggle to keep clean sheets and the goal they gave up in this game was just as about as bad as it gets, as Lucas Leiva inexplicably presented the ball to Jamie Vardy with the net gaping. Manager rating out of 10. 8 -- Leaving out Philippe Coutinho will have raised some eyebrows but Liverpool's forward line thrived in the Brazilian's absence. Jurgen Klopp had obviously prepared his players well for the challenge posed by Leicester's style of play as -- one self-inflicted goal apart -- Liverpool were completely in control. Player ratings (1-10. 10=best. Made a good save with his foot to deny Vardy after the break. DF Nathaniel Clyne, 7 -- The England man hadn't made the most impressive start to the season but he looked back to his best in this game. Defensively untroubled, he regularly got forward and contributed to attacking moves and is striking up a good understanding with Sadio Mane. Made one superb intervention to deny Vardy in the second half. DF Lucas Leiva, 6 -- It says a lot about the Brazilian's performance that he still managed a respectable grade despite the horrific error that got Leicester back into the game. That one mistake aside he was flawless, making several timely tackles and distributing the ball well to start attacks. DF James Milner, 8 -- Excellent performance from the vice-captain. His awareness and positioning prevented Vardy running through early on and soon after he was creating the opening goal for Firmino with a slide-rule pass. Milner kept danger man Riyad Mahrez quiet and can be well pleased with his display. MF Jordan Henderson, 8 -- Impressive display from the skipper, who kept the team ticking over with his passing and put himself about to restrict Leicester from counter-attacking: One touchline challenge on Marc Albrighton had Klopp pumping his... • Homeric Stitchings

    Rowman & Littlefield. 1998. ISBN: 0847690504,9780847690503. 173 pages.

Homeric Stitchings is the first extended study of the Homeric Centos, a long pastiche poem on a biblical theme composed by the Theodosian Empress Eudocia using only verses from the Iliad and the Odyssey. Building upon recent work on Homeric poetics, and utilizing linguistic and semiotic methods of analysis, this study introduces readers to the Centos as a sophisticated comparative reading of Homer and the Bible, based upon intertextual associations of ideas, words, and sounds. Homeric Stitchings is a study in the performative aspects of ancient reading, the processes of human memory, and the reception of Homeric poetry as oral poetry in later antiquity. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of Homer, the Bible and comparative literature, and cultural historians.
