Pearl Washington made unforgettable moments any time, any place - Sporting News

Dwayne "Pearl" Washington created the greatest basketball moment I’ve ever experienced in person. It wasn’t for Syracuse, it wasn’t in the NBA, it wasn’t in the Carrier Dome or Madison Square Garden. It was in Buffalo, in the summer of 1985, in a stuffy gym packed to fire-hazard proportions, at the men’s basketball semifinals of a statewide Olympic-style sports festival that has been extinct since 2010. MORE: Notable sports deaths of 2016 |... That says a lot about 31 years of basketball. nothing seems new, or what seemed new then is now routine. That’s what he did best, shame opponents and shake houses with his passing. Everybody knew Pearl then, of course. the next year was his final season at Syracuse, and the legend he’d brought with him from the playgrounds and high school gyms of Brooklyn had only grown. Walter Berry — known as The Truth before Paul Pierce — from Harlem and St. John’s, was his teammate that night. he had come off of a Final Four season and was heading toward national Player of the Year. DeCOURCY: The beauty of Pearl will not fade with his passing. The New York City team was playing the one from Western New York, Buffalo’s home region. Local fans competed for seats with fans from the city who had driven eight hours to see this showdown. That’s the scene that I, a summer intern at Newsday, and Mark Stewart, my best friend from college and an intern at the Syracuse Post-Standard, strolled up to. There wasn’t exactly a separate media entrance. we had to squeeze our way in. . Someone near the door made an offer we almost couldn’t refuse (but we did, since it would have ended our journalism careers before they started): “I’ll give you $50 for your press pass. Once we made it to courtside, we found our seats taken by a couple of New York City followers. It was worth it. HYBER: Pearl Washington was Syracuse basketball. The New York City team won (spoiler alert, three decades later). But late in that game, Pearl did this:. A defender caught up to him on the edge of the lane, but then Pearl slammed on the breaks from about eight feet away and, without looking, spiked the ball onto the court.
