-- The Senate came to a hasty end late Tuesday after agreeing to extend dozens of expired tax breaks and to approve nominations of dozens of federal judges. Senate leaders couldn't convince Sen. ( Washington Post ). -- Senate leaders could have tried to move the TRIA reauthorization under normal Senate procedures, but that would have kept them in session for several more days. Democrats blamed House Financial Services Committee chair Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas) for including a Wall Street regulation in the TRIA package. had that provision been left out, TRIA could have been included in the cromnibus. ( The Hill ). -- A day after dramatically hiking interest rates in an effort to save the ruble, the Russian Central Bank appeared to be intervening on behalf of their currency as values swung wildly. The Foreign Ministry and the Central Bank said they would sell off reserves of foreign currency to prop up the ruble. ( Washington Post ). -- Today's banner on Drudge: President Obama has issued more presidential memoranda than any other chief executive in history , even as he makes fewer executive orders than his predecessor. Memoranda have the same force of law as an executive order. Obama is the first president in modern history to issue more memoranda (198 so far) than executive orders (195 so far). ( USA Today ). -- The Obama administration overturned a ban preventing wealthy Ecuadorean Estefania Isaias from entering the U. S. after her family gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to American politicians. The administration has also allowed the patriarchs of the family, Roberto and William Isaias, to avoid extradition after they were convicted in absentia in Ecuador. Bob Menendez (D-N. J. ) intervened on the family's behalf. The Isaias family donated $100,000 to President Obama's re-election campaign in 2012. ( New York Times ). -- Incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch.
