Redwood Coast Music Festival takes over the town - Eureka Times Standard

There’s a whole lot of music coming to town this weekend, with the Redwood Coast Music Festival’s opening dance tonight kicking off the event that runs through Sunday. Festival board member Lynn McKenna said the popular annual soiree has dealt with a bit of everything in its 25 years. This year an assortment of music and musicians will keep the venues bopping from the kick-off dance tonight to the after party on Sunday afternoon. It’s now known as the Redwood Coast Music Festival rather than the Redwood Coast Jazz Festival — with the event including much more than jazz, McKenna said. Dancing, enjoying the music and having a good time will remain the same. The ongoing economic impact to Humboldt County continues — from the festival profits earmarked for senior programs and children’s music programs to the dollars spent at hotels, motels, restaurants and elsewhere. “We know there’s a big audience of people who follow the festival circuit,” said Tony Smithers, executive director of the Humboldt County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Festival passes provide access to all events held this weekend and are still available at the Redwood Coast Music Festival office located 523 Fifth St. in Eureka on Friday. The first of those is the kick-off dance tonight at the Adorni Center, with the doors opening at 6:30 p. m. with the music of Meschiya Lake & the Little Big Horns from 7 to 10 p. m. Admission is $10 or $8 with an all-event pass. It’s a perfect musical dessert to Eureka Main Street’s annual Taste of Main Street — an opportunity to sample the culinary accomplishments of 24 restaurants at various Old Town and downtown Eureka venues tonight from 5 p. m. to 8 p. m. Eureka Main... “Our event kicks off their event,” she said. “It’s such a feel good — it’s music, it’s dancing, it’s people getting out and having fun. The opening ceremonies are set for 1 p. m. Friday at the Adorni Center and include a dedication to Alan Smyth and all the festival’s volunteers, McKenna said. As well as serving on the festival’s board of directors, Smyth has been involved in the annual event since the beginning. The opening ceremonies also provide an opportunity for music teachers to draw tickets for five refurbished musical instruments. Source: www.times-standard.com
