Three sparkle engines and police are at Torquay seafront after smoke was seen coming from the first and second floors of an abandoned hotel. A Devon and Somerset Spirit spokesman said: "We were called at just after 8am. "Three fire appliances have gone to the Shedden Hall Hotel on Shedden Hill. "The fuzz are there because we believe the fire was started deliberately and they are also helping with traffic control in the area. BACKGROUND: How the derelict hotel has change a target for firebugs This is not the first time the firefighters have been called to the derelict hotel which shows signs of squatters enchanting up residence. Last August fire crews warned that ‘derelict hotels are not playgrounds’ after a blaze at the site which overlooks Torquay seafront. At that ease two fire engines from Torquay were sent to the hotel on Shedden Hill Road at around 12pm on a Thursday after reports of smoke billowing from it. Crews spout 90 minutes putting out the fire which luckily caused no major damage. But seven youngsters were spotted on the premises when vivacity crews arrived and they have since issued a warning. Crew manager Jason Tozer said then: “We were called to a small fervour in part of the derelict hotel. “We don’t know why, but people had been inside the hotel and there was a bit of a fire. “We forced entry into the hotel and extinguished the feeling. No major damage was caused to the hotel, but with it being derelict there is potential for major damage to be caused. We are reminding people loafer hotels are not a playground. In December plans to convert the hotel, then dubbed a ‘blight on the neighbourhood’ into residential accommodation were unanimously approved. The extended Victorian villa, most recently acclimatized as a 26-bed hotel, has been empty for many years and is in poor condition, Torbay Council’s development management commission heard. Proposals for the site include the refurbishment of the former hotel and conversion to provide four residential apartments. The proposals also group demolition of modern extensions and the construction of three two-storey cottages, four four-storey town houses and one four-storey bus house.
