Product Description
Published for the first time from a unique manuscript housed in the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. With source notes, commentary, and detailed indices of sources and subjects.
Preceded by two lengthy introductions, one dealing with the manuscript, the work and its contents, and the second dealing with the life and time of R. Capsali, and his communal leadership.
Me'ah She'arim includes 100 chapters dedicated to the subject of kibbud av va'em, the commandment to honor and respect one's parents. In addition, the end chapters deal with the education of one's children and Jewish family relations. The author's style of writing is very elegant and flowery, rich in allusion to Biblical phraseology, Midrash and liturgy.
The book has enjoyed, and is still enjoying, great acceptance. It is quoted by halakhic decisors and cited in scholarly historical treatises the world over.

Why Do So Many Jews Who Leave The Ultra-Orthodox Community Commit Suicide? - Gothamist

When she was sixteen years old, Sara Erenthal ran away from home to escape an arranged marriage. Erenthal's family, who had relocated from Jerusalem's ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim to Borough Park, are Neturei Kartaone of the more cloistered ultra-Orthodox sects. After she ran away, Erenthal's father disowned her. “One of the hardest things for me leaving the community was losing touch with every single person I’ve known and being completely alone in the world,” Erenthal told Gothamist recently. “It’s very, very, very difficult. Individuals like Erenthal who leave the ultra-Orthodox community to pursue a secular life are frequently shunned and ostracized by their families and loved ones. Their parents might refuse to see or communicate with them, and keep them from their family home. Many have had no secular education, and find it difficult to find employment. If they have children, those children are often lost in custody battles, or they turn against their parents, who they view as pariahs. “In general, there’s definitely a strong feeling of suicidality amongst a sizable amount of people who leave ultra-Orthodoxy,” explained Leah Vincent, who was pushed out of the ultra Orthodox community and banished by her family for the sin of... Shortly before the release of her memoir, memoir , Cut Me Loose: Sin and Salvation After My Ultra-Orthodox Girlhood , Vincent's father, a prominent rabbi, put out a statement to the media. The emotional stress and trauma associated with pursuing a secular life stems not only from the physical and familial challenges. It’s rooted in the prophetic language that suffuses ultra-Orthodox discourse, instructing its adherents from a very early age that anyone who leaves the strict confines of the community is bound for a life of misery, prostitution, and death. “Every song of my childhood, every parable, told me that anyone who tries to leave will end up miserable and or dead,” Vincent explained. Among the formerly ultra-Orthodox, sometimes called XOs or OTDs for “Off the Derech,” or path, thoughts of suicide have all too frequently turned into tragic. Source: gothamist.com

  • Into Thin Places

Wipf and Stock Publishers. 2011. ISBN: 9781610970938,1610970934. 432 pages.

In this third volume of his "Adventures in Spirituality" trilogy, Dr. Robert Vande Kappelle travels from Amsterdam to Cairo in search of his cultural and spiritual roots, inviting readers to join him in exploring fabled places across the Mediterranean World. Despite the grave problems centered in this region, it is the birthplace of Western civilization and the source of the world's three guiding religions. Readers unfamiliar with the emergence and development of Western civilization will find Into Thin Places a compelling introduction; others will discover here a new perspective.Affirming the human quest for adventure, meaning, and wholeness, Professor Vande Kappelle beckons adventurers to enjoy the wonderful experiences described in the book's "travel entries." Those seeking historical and cultural perspective will want to examine the numerous "explanatory entries" scattered throughout the narrative. These vignettes expand and deepen the storyline, piquing curiosity about seminal events, persons, and places that helped shape Western sensibility. As Dr. Vande Kappelle points out in his closing chapter, our world is in a state of crisis, precipitated by numerous factors but primarily by the loss of the sacred. "Whether the current crisis is curable is debatable, but it will clearly require massive cultural reorientation. More importantly, it will require a transformation of the human spirit and a commitment of will." Into Thin Places encourages readers to find "thin places"--places transparent to the divine--in their own transformative journeys of discovery.
