Product Description
Noël Coward is remembered as the most witty and elegant of theatrical personalities. He left behind over fifty plays, twenty-five films, hundreds of songs, and several books. Fortunately, he also left behind these diaries chronicling the last thirty years of his life, from 1941 to 1973. Moving through the theatrical, social, political, and historical worlds on both sides of the Atlantic, the impressive cast of characters includes Laurence Olivier, Frank Sinatra, Lauren Bacall, John and Jackie Kennedy, Harold Pinter, members of the Royal Family, and the Beatles, among a host of others. The Noël Coward Diaries is a social and theatrical chronicle as stylish and irresistible as the man himself.
Product Description
Philip Hoare, in his biography of Coward described Semi-Monde as his "most daring play to date. In a chic Parisian hotel, a series of sexual
pairings take place through rendezvous, arguments, infidelities and
reconciliations: sexual deviance is undisguised...set in the bisexual
1920s, the play could easily be populated by characters of Coward's
society".

Point Valaine is "the
drama of a lurid episode of lust in the semi-tropics.. unmistakably the
work of a master of the stage" (New York Times); South Sea Bubble which
concerns "the Governor's lady in the Isle of Samolo who plays with
native fire, nearly gets her wings singed, bashes her native admirer
with a bottle and at one of those Coward next-morning-at breakfast
scenes slips her way out of the scrape with feline grace." (Manchester
Guardian) whilst Nude With Violin is a witty comedy about art fraud.

Home Made Theater revisiting 'The Man Who Came To Dinner' - The Saratogian

SARATOGA SPRINGS >> Saratoga’s Home Made Theater is wrapping up its 30th season in residence at the Spa Little Theater at Saratoga Spa State Park by revisiting the production with which they took their first bows at the Little Theater thirty years... But it’s not truly a revival – nor, director Dianne O’Neill Filer points out, was it truly HMT’s first show. “It’s the first one they performed at the Spa Little Theater,” she notes. Rather, this is an all-new production – only two of the cast’s twenty-four members appeared in the 1986 original -- with a newcomer to HMT in the juicy signature role of radio personality Sheridan Whiteside: Gary Maggio. “Curtain Call is a very small space, where Home Made Theater’s space is ten times larger than that,” says Maggio. I like to go into a corner and hide, and I like small casts. That was my one concern in (coming to HMT). But the play kind of revolves around my character, and they’ve been grand. And if “The Man Who Came To Dinner” has a special place in HMT’s heart and history, the play also has a Saratoga connection: the actor Monty Woolley, who originally played Whiteside on Broadway and in the subsequent film adaptation, was a Saratoga... The play was inspired by Moss Hart’s friend Alexander Woollcott, the author, critic and radio star, based on an encounter with Hart at the latter’s home in rural Pennsylvania -- during which Woollcott behaved much as Whiteside does in the play. “He was a totally obnoxious guest, and he wrote something totally obnoxious in the guest book when he left,” says Filer. Far from being offended by the obvious parody – many of the characters are thinly-veiled references to Woollcott associates like Harpo Marx and Noel Coward – Woollcott even played himself in one later regional “Dinner” production. “Apparently, his ego was big enough that he enjoyed the fact that he was being parodied,” says Filer. Though he confesses to having had no particular initial inclination to audition for a show so far from his Albany home, the presence of Filer -- with whom he has worked in the past at Curtain Call and in a local staged reading of a play about... But at the end, when (Whiteside’s) humanity is revealed, we say he may be a blowhard, he may have an ego the size of Texas,. Source: www.saratogian.com
