The Indian River Inlet fleet scored on the season’s first tuna over the weekend, officially kicking off the local offshore season. Drew Holladay and Brad Cave trolled the Wilmington Canyon for a 31-pound yellowfin and a 7. 5-pound mahi mahi. Anglers on the private boat Knock On Wood overnighted off of the Jersey coast in the Spencer Canyon, returning to the marina on Saturday with five yellowfin flags flying from the outriggers. The crew of the Talkin’ Trash returned to the Ocean City Fishing Center after a day of sharking with release flags flying for three makos and a pair of blue sharks. Toggers fishing the last few days of Delaware’s open season enjoyed quality fishing on the inshore wrecks and reef sites, with some real nice fish weighed in at Lewes Harbour Marina. Delaware’s tautog season is closed through July 16. Maryland’s tog season remains open, but the daily creel will be cut from the current limit of four fish per angler per day to just two tog a day beginning Saturday. The unusual run of chopper bluefish continued over the weekend, with some of the best fishing reported by anglers fishing Indian River Inlet and the Indian River Bay between the inlet and Holt’s Landing. Bob Hilton checked in at Rick’s Bait and Tackle with a chopper blue weighing 19. 5 pounds caught in the inlet on a Storm shad body lure. Fishermen targeting keeper rockfish are catching increasing numbers of fish over 28 inches in Indian River Inlet, with reports from Old Inlet Bait and Tackle indicating better fishing at night than during the day. Fishermen are reminded that a major change in striped bass regulations went into effect May 11. Under the new rules anglers can only keep a total of two stripers per day with legal fish defined as those measuring between 28 and 37 inches and those... Fish that fall within the 37- to 44-inch slot must be released immediately. Flounder reports slowed a bit over the weekend, due to extremely foggy conditions on Delaware’s back bays, but the fishing has been good on days when weather conditions cooperate. Productive locations include the area known as Red Roof House, the VFW Slough, the south side of Indian River Inlet from the campground to South Shore Marina, Gull Island, Massey’s Ditch and Little Ditch.
