Mystery roundup: Gillian Flynn, Connelly - USA TODAY

Gillian Flynn is gone no more, there's a new Harry Bosch novel, and female detectives are on the case in South Africa and New York. Reviewer Charles Finch checks in on four new mysteries. Crown, 64 pp. 3. 5 out of 4 stars. In this fleet, smart, twisting, essentially perfect little tale, the author of Gone Girl gives us a ghost story – maybe. Its unnamed narrator, sharp but sad, grew up panhandling with her mother, and now works as a psychic, offering a frisson of strangeness to bored people rich enough that their “primary purpose is to live in the city but feel like they’re in the... The Grownup feels like a money-grab, 10 bucks for 30 minutes’ worth of reading of a story that’s already been anthologized elsewhere. Still, Flynn is so funny, so wearily wise, and the twists in her novelita are so well-timed and unexpected that, like Woody Allen in Manhattan , you’re almost enraptured enough to stop glancing at the taxi’s meter. Little, Brown, 388 pp. 2. 5 stars. The pleasure of the Harry Bosch novels lies in their brilliant, brick-by-brick plotlines, which replicate with a reporter’s granular attention precisely how an LAPD homicide detective finds a murderer. The portentous noir sermonizing – usually delivered as Bosch stares impassively out at a Los Angeles night – is a transaction cost you’re happy to pay while the story is clicking. In The Crossing , Connelly makes the bizarre choice to present us with his bad guys in the first scene, just about halving the suspense of the tale that follows. They’re a pair of dirty cops, responsible for the murder of a city official. Bosch – just retired – steps in, uneasily, to investigate on behalf of the patsy they’ve pinned the crime to. Even Connelly’s weaker books are stocked with fascinating detail, but readers attracted to the series by the (pretty good. Recipes for Love and Murder. Ecco, 432 pp. 3 stars. Recipes for Love and Murder , a sincere, charming South African debut, should ruin a lot of diets. its many irresistible recipes are the creation of Tannie Maria, a gentle-souled widow who believes that good food can solve problems bigger than hunger. She gives her recipes out in the local newspaper, but when she becomes its advice columnist the promotion lands her in the thick of an ugly local murder investigation. An inevitable comparison here is to Alexander McCall Smith, and here too it’s possible to be uneasy about the feel-good vibes of a mystery by a white author with an African setting and a.
