Antigo wrestlers hit slump at weekend tournaments - Antigo Daily Journal

The Antigo varsity wrestling team took a small squad to compete at the 59th annual Fred Lehrke Evergreen invite this past Saturday, while the JV squad traveled to Merrill to compete in the first annual JV Challenge Series Qualifier Regional. Things did not go so well for the Robins. Boy what a difference one week can make, Antigo wrestling head coach Dallas Moe said. Last week, we were fresh and coming off of break we had one of our best tournaments possible and this week we looked tired and worn out. The varsity boys started the day struggling to get things working properly and at lunch-time, I was a little worried. Varsity had one place-winner in Brandon Lucht at 106. Lucht finished the day 3-2 with two pins and a third place finish. That is his third time making the podium this season in four individual tournaments. Brandon had a really good day, said Moe. He is consistently getting very close to the top and now is the time of the year where we are looking to turn the corner and be the one standing at the top at the end of the day. The only other varsity wrestler to come away with a winning record was Garrett Becerra at 182. Becerra also finished 3-2 collecting two pins but because of where his wins came in the tournament, finished fifth. Also wrestling at Everest were Bill Hull at 113 going 2-3 finishing sixth. Garret Balis going 2-3 with a pin, sixth. Noah Nicholson at 170 going 2-3 with a pin, seventh. Josafat Garcia-Morales at 220 going 1-4 with a pin, fifth and Devon Brisby at 285 going 1-4, fifth. At Merrill, the JV wrestlers had a similar kind of day, getting off to a rough start but finishing better than they started. Red Robin assistant coach Quinn Hrdlicka had this to say, We started pretty sloppy, and in a double-elimination tournament, you have to try to avoid that. We wrestled tough after the first round but at that time, its almost too late. Dom Quartaro, 145, wrestled well in the later rounds as did Noah Williams, 285, placing sixth and fifth respectively. Also competing in Merrill were Mark Seidl at 113, Derick Simonis at 145, Brenden Powell at 170, Nick Stuckert at 182, and Justin Koszarek at 220. The Robins will take on Mosinee for senior night Thursday at 7 p. m. in the Sheldon Fieldhouse. Source: www.antigodailyjournal.com
