Israel Should Learn to Recover Its Ideals From US Reform Judaism - Haaretz

Tikkun olam is too often thought of as the Jewish commitment to universal ethics. If tikkun olam begins at home, then it begins not only with our literal homes in communities across North America, but with our spiritual home in Israel. The Jewish state needs the Reform Movement to be staunch defenders of Israel. As the largest North American Jewish movement, we can and should be key in challenging the global BDS campaign to delegitimize Israel. Yet Jews who see brokenness in the treatment of Israel’s minorities, or in the way ultra-Orthodox views of Judaism are being enshrined in secular law, are told that, when it comes to Israel, check your commitment to tikkun olam at the door. In Israel, the loudest Jewish religious voices promote ethnocentrism. In North America, too often the loudest pro-Israel voices refuse to acknowledge the times when Israel falls short of her Declaration of Independence. We can – and do – make a much stronger case for Israel when Israel is seen as she is, rather than as some idealized version of herself. Some well-funded campus anti-BDS efforts, like the Campus Maccabees, recruit mostly hawkish speakers on behalf of Israel. But many Jewish students on campus believe, as do we, that their love for Israel not only requires rebutting the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement, but compels them to challenge troubling Israeli policies that fail to live up to the... Many Jews, especially younger ones, feel that Israel has become too intolerant, not only of Arab citizens of Israel, but of non-Orthodox Jews, Ethiopian Jews, LGBT Jews, asylum seekers who are fleeing their own countries, and others. Even while grieving for Israeli victims of terror, many cannot relate to the continued growth of settlements in the West Bank, or the weakening of democratic institutions like Israel’s Supreme Court, by the ultra-Orthodox and far-right circles. Our Reform Movement has long opposed Israeli settlement policy in the West Bank. It causes pain and hardship to the Palestinians and alienates Israel from friends and allies around the world. Only two states for two peoples – both states viable and secure, living side by side in peace – will bring this tragic conflict to its long-awaited end. Source: www.haaretz.com

This gripping story history of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) begins more like an ending when an unknown, single, middle-aged, British-woman Missionary, was forced to flee China when Communists moved in. Grieving the heart-breaking conclusion of what she'd believed was her life-long calling, Wetherell Johnson's journey home to England collided with a Divine appointment when five California women asked her to teach them more about the Bible. She agreed and that Bible study with five women grew into an organization which exploded into a movement that now ministers to hundreds of thousands of students every week and has impacted the lives of millions of people in countries around the world including the Republic of China. Told through a big family photo album pasted together and held in place with a fascinating narrative thread, God's faithfulness through His plans, will touch your heart and renew your passion for His Word.
