SWITZERLAND: This was an absolutely heart-breaking result for Switzerland. POLAND: Just like in the group stage against Ukraine, Blaszczykowski scored the opening goal and had a man of the match performance. Get this: when Blaszczykowski scores, the Swiss are 18-0. Star striker Robert Lewandowski struggled, but the defense put on another impressive performance. Wales 1-0 Northern Ireland. 75' – WAL – Gareth McAuley (OG). WALES: It was a frustrating opening 45 minutes for Wales as manager Chris Coleman went with the same starting lineup that defeated Russia 4-0 on matchday three. The goal may not have been memorable, but it made the nation of Wales believe that they can win this tournament. The tension rose throughout the match, both sides knowing that this is their best opportunity to reach the quarterfinals of a major tournament for the first time since the 1958 World Cup. The reality that the own goal was from McAuley, who had been one of Northern Ireland's best players, was painful. Croatia 0-1 Portugal (aet). CROATIA: Croatia were the favorites entering this match, but they did not take that role well. Instead of taking some risks, they waited for Portugal to make a mistake. But just when everyone expected penalties, Portugal found a rare hole in Croatia's defense and that was that. Some were saying that Croatia had the potential to win the entire tournament, but it just goes to show that you have to take some risks in order to win. PORTUGAL: Even after snatching victory at the death, Portugal have every right to be overjoyed. After drawing some recent criticism for his side's group stage performance, manager Fernando Santos gave starts to three players making their tournament debuts. He set his side up well to deal with Croatia's duo of Luka Modrić and Ivan Rakitić. Led by superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal now have their sights set on going all the way. 2' – IRL – Robbie Brady (PK). 58' – FRA – Antoine Greizmann (AST from Bacary Sagna). 61' – FRA – Antoine Greizmann (AST from Olivier Giroud). FRANCE: It was a tale of two halves for France. Source: The Shin Report

  • Who's Afraid of the Easter Rising? 1916-2016

John Hunt Publishing. 2015. ISBN: 9781782798866,1782798862. 168 pages.

One hundred years ago, Easter 1916, Irish revolutionaries rose against the British Empire proclaiming a Republic from the steps of the General Post Office in Dublin. The men and women of the Easter Rising were defeated by the overwhelming force of the British Army, in five days of intense fighting. Their leaders were executed. But the Easter Rising lit a fire that ended with the whole country turning against Westminster’s rule, and founding a nation. But today, the heirs to the Irish state are embarrassed about 1916. They are ashamed that their state owes its origins to a revolution. Along with academics and other commentators in the press and on television they dismiss the Rising as the work of violent fanatics, and the defeat of constitutional politics. Who’s Afraid of the Easter Rising? explains why today’s Dublin elite are recoiling from the origins of their state in a popular struggle. Where the critics paint the Rising as an armed conspiracy, we explain that it was in fact a revolt against war; not a militaristic upsurge, but the first challenge to the awful slaughter of the First World War. The Statesmen of Europe sacrificed millions upon the altar of war. Their recruiting sergeants in Ireland, Edward Carson and John Redmond sent 200,000 Irishmen into the slaughter and nearly 50,000 were killed. The Easter Rising drew a halt to British recruitment, and the blow to the Empire was the first crack in a growing revolt against the war, followed by the Russian Revolution in 1917, and the German revolution the following year – which ended the conflict. The Easter Rising was an inspiration to those who were challenging the Empires of Europe, from India to Vietnam, from New Zealand to Moscow; it was an inspiration to British activists like John Maclean and Sylvia Pankhurst; and it was an inspiration to the Irish men and women who rose up against British rule to free their nation.
