Most Kiwis will enjoy an extra day off tomorrow, but the country's first 'mondayised' public holiday has left employers, shoppers and some parents scratching their heads. It was just a few sentences long, joyfully tacked onto a law 18 months ago - but the Holidays Amendment Bill has come roaring into the present, bringing with it some joy and a lot of confusion. Monday marks the first time an ANZAC or Waitangi Day has been 'mondayised,' meaning no one will miss out on a public holiday. "It's kind of a weird one that confuses most people, I think," said Shelley Lechner-Page, manager of popular Christchurch cafe Black Betty. As a rule, the cafe closed on public holidays, but this year it stayed open on ANZAC Day. The owner had inquired about the rule and decided to close on Monday instead. But the fact it happened to fall on a Saturday this year is actually better for us, because Monday's our quietest day of the week. Though Mondayisation was a fairly simple process for most workers - they just needed to stay at home on Monday - it had caused headaches for business owners. "We've actually had a flood of inquiries [from businesses] about the Mondayising," said Employers and Manufacturers association spokesman Gilbert Peterson. If people worked both the Saturday and the Monday, which day is the public holiday. He said if you normally worked Saturday, that was your holiday. Though businesses may have been unclear about the law, it was unlikely many workers would be wandering bleary-eyed to work on Monday, he said. "People are pretty attuned to making sure they take the holidays they can. I don't think it's likely, but you never know, someone might be half asleep and do it. ". Confusion about the holiday had been augmented by a shortage of publicity by the government, said Jeff Sissons, general counsel for the Council of Trade... There's a really strong role for the government here - this is a law change, an act of Parliament, so the government has a responsibility to let people know about this stuff," he said. The result would be businesses getting pinged for getting it wrong and paying their workers incorrectly. "We think that's probably quite likely… people who haven't got their payroll systems up to date may just treat this as a normal work day for the purposes of paying. Eager shoppers were left queuing outside Auckland shopping centres on Saturday morning after forgetting shops were closed until 1pm,. Parents also had to figure out the rules: Saturday morning sports went ahead, but school doors are closed on Monday. Source: www.stuff.co.nz
