This now classic book revealed Flannery O'Connor as one of the most original and provocative writers to emerge from the South. Her apocalyptic vision of life is expressed through grotesque, often comic situations in which the principal character faces a problem of salvation: the grandmother, in the title story, confronting the murderous Misfit; a neglected four-year-old boy looking for the Kingdom of Christ in the fast-flowing waters of the river; General Sash, about to meet the final enemy. Stories include:"A Good Man Is Hard to Find" "The River" "The Life You Save May Be Your Own" "A Stroke of Good Fortune" "A Temple of the Holy Ghost" "The Artificial Nigger" "A Circle in the Fire" "A Late Encounter with the Enemy" "Good Country People" "The Displaced Person"
Five years on from the failed franchise starter that starred Seth Rogen, a new edgier reboot of The Green Hornet is in development from Paramount Pictures and Chernin Entertainment. Filmmaker Gavin O'Connor (The Accountant) is onboard to direct, and speaking to Deadline , O'Connor has revealed that this is a long-held dream to bring The Green Hornet back to the big screen. "For almost 20 years now I’ve been tracking the rights, watching from the sidelines as they were optioned by one studio or another. When I discovered the rights were available again, I tracked them down, partnered with Peter Chernin and we set the movie up at Paramount. With the rights now in our loving hands, I’m beyond excited to bring The Green Hornet into the 21st century in a meaningful and relevant way. The adventures of Britt Reid (aka The Green Hornet) and his trusty sidekick Kato started life as a radio serial in the 1930s and a hit film series followed in the 40s. The late 60s brought the short-lived TV show that starred Van Williams as Reid... Unlike Michel Gondry's 2011 movie that amplified the comedic value, O'Connor's vision for the new Green Hornet sounds more tonally in line with Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight. "My intention is to bring a gravitas to The Green Hornet that wipes away the camp and kitsch of the previous iteration. I want to re-mythologize The Green Hornet in a contemporary context, with an emphasis on story and character, while at the same time, incorporating themes that speak to my heart. The comic book movie is the genre of our time. How do we create a distinctive film experience that tells itself differently than other comic book movies. How do we put a beating heart into the character that was never done before. There's no shortage of superhero movies (and TV shows) that have delved into the darker recesses of fractured characters and it has worked a treat. I have a lot of affection for The Green Hornet TV series, in contrast to the campy charms of 60s Batman that starred Adam West, The Green Hornet wasn't played for laughs. Gavin O'Connor's passion for the project is infectious and given the lack of love for the Michel Gondry version. a reboot was inevitable so let's just embrace it and hope this one gets it right.
