Product Description
The eighth issue of Camerawork (November 1977), the influential 1970s leftist British photography magazine published by the Half Moon Photography Workshop. It was "collectively published by photographers for photographers and with a commitment to wide-ranging investigation of theory and practice. ...They aimed in each issue not at promulgating a consistent party line but to treat the themes from various perspectives--practical and theoretical--engaging readers in a lively open debate rather than proving definite answers." It lasted 32 issues (1976-1985.) THIS ISSUE is devoted to the 'Battle of Lewisham' in August 1977 that resulted when the fascist group, the National Front, attempted to march through the largely immigrant, multi-racial, and working class neighborhood of Lewisham, London. The police were determined that the march would progress and when the march was stopped by the anti-NF demonstrations, the police turned on the demonstrators. The issue includes about 25 photographs taken on the day of the event, analysis of how the media used images to frame perception of the day, how the newspapers covered the event, and dissection of the front page of a leading daily newspaper. They also reprinted in full the text of the address by the leader of the National Front with an analysis of his racial views and of how the national media took quotes out of context to soften the NF's racism. There are also lengthy interviews with eight freelance photographers who covered the event, discussing why they were taking photographs, what they were trying to show, how they were treated by demonstrators and police, and how their pictures were used. Photographers include: Chris Steele-Perkins, Homer Sykes, Phil McGowen, Paul Trevor, Peter Marlow and others. Tabloid, semi-gloss stock; 16 pages; b&w illustrations throughout; 11.75 x 16.5 inches, folded to 8.25 x 11.75, as issued. Note: the cover photograph was misattributed to Chris Schwarz; it was taken by Chris Steele-Perkins.

Letters for Oct. 29 -

Article 3 asks us if we should require septic systems to be inspected prior to a sale. This question came about because the town of York has been trying to determine the source of the human fecal bacteria that exists in our streams, rivers and beaches. Septic systems along the rivers have been inspected and found not to be the source. Source:
