MALONE — Former Franklin County District Attorney Derek P. Champagne was sworn in Friday as a Family Court judge. His first act was to swear in Chief Assistant District Attorney Glenn MacNeill as the new DA. Mr. MacNeill will hold that job until an election is held next fall to fill the three-year unexpired term. The courtroom erupted with laughter when the two men talked over each other at the start of the oath, and Mr. Champagne apologized, saying, “I’m new at this. Elizabeth O’C. Little, R-Queensbury, and Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey, R-Peru, took their oaths of office for new terms while in Malone. County, Supreme and Family Court Judge Robert G. Main Jr. presided over the entire ceremony, which invited newly elected or re-elected officials to be sworn in. County Sheriff Kevin A. Mulverhill officially began his second four-year term after he... Also called forward were Assistant District Attorney Gary Pasqua, who will be chief ADA. Assistant Conflict Defender Meredith Larsen. Santa Clara Town Justice Michelle Brown-Garcia, and Malone Village Trustee Andrea Dumas. But the spotlight belonged to Mr. Champagne, who is filling one of 20 Family Court judge seats created by the state Legislature in June to clear up a backlog in such cases across the state. Champagne, 45, leaves next week for training at the New York State Judicial Institute at Pace University Law School, White Plains. In addition to his duties in Franklin County, Mr. Champagne will hear Family Court and criminal cases in St. Lawrence County every Friday. He said that during the 17 years he worked in the DA’s office, the goal was to strive to do what was right and just, and that will continue to be his goal as a Family Court judge. Champagne took the oath surrounded by his wife, Jennifer, and daughters Madeleine, 17, and Madonna, 15. He was presented his judicial robe by Steven Vanier, president of the Franklin County Bar Association. He had several family members, friends, fellow attorneys and law-enforcement personnel there to witness what Mr. Main called a historic event in Franklin County. Main said it was the first time two elected judges were seated “to serve the judicial needs of its citizens. He got a laugh from the crowd in the gallery and overflowing jury box when he said, “No citizen is more eager to welcome a colleague than I,” adding that the new judge was getting his oath before the others “so he can get to work. "This collection covers a wide range of Shakespeare productions, from Granville Barker and Poel's experiments with cross-gender casting to recent performances by Cheek by Jowl, the National Theatre, and the new Globe; from early twentieth-century performances by women's companies in England and Japan to contemporary stagings by the Los Angeles Women's Shakespeare Company; from Mabou Mines' controversial Lear in New York to a more subtly transgressive Tempest by the Georgia Shakespeare Festival." "These essays are comprehensive in their consideration of cross-gender-cast Shakespeare as it evolved over the past century. Theoretically informed yet grounded in the particularity of individual performances, they forge new connections between performance studies and gender theory and broach issues vital to anyone interested in Shakespeare."--BOOK JACKET.
