Claudio Merulo: Motets
Product Description
Claudio Merulo was one of a small number of Italian Renaissance composers who was instrumental in transforming the musical landscape of the 16th century. He was a hugely prolific writer of keyboard music, marking the change from vocal-based forms to new genres written especially for the instrument. Additionally, he wrote sublime sacred music in the Venetian tradition of the High Renaissance, and his motets, which are intended for the Office, are remarkable for their clear and spacious lines alongside bold imitative counterpoint. This is the fifth book of his motets, which reveal an innovative form and sophisticated linguistic freedom. The interplay of musical spaces and colours anticipate the concertato style of the rising Baroque period. He directs the Modus Ensemble, a group of young Italian musicians whose repertoire also spans many musical periods, from Renaissance to contemporary.Merulos Motets, though standing in the tradition of the High Renaissance, reveal an innovative form and linguistic freedom. In his 5-part Motets for single choir the initial imitative counterpoints develops into antiphonal sections and ritornello passages that anticipate the concertato style of the emerging Baroque period. The Italian Modus Ensemble, conducted by Mauro Marchetti, is accompanied by viola da gamba, violone, theorbo and organ. The complete sung texts in the original language are included in the booklet.

Lazio 1-2 Inter: Hernanes comes back to haunt his former employers

For the thousands of Lazio supporters packed inside the Stadio Olympic just 24 hours after witnessing inter-city and Champions League chasing rivals Roma drop three invaluable points at the home of Milan, they were treated to a spectacle. Brazilian midfielder Hernanes, who spent four years as a Lazio player, came back to haunt them. Two expertly taken efforts, either side of half-time, proved enough to see Roberto Mancini’s side over the victory line. Inter still harbour hopes of finishing the season in the Europa League places, with the result taking them to within two points of 6th place Sampdoria, and although they found themselves behind early on courtesy of an Antonio Candreva effort,... Roma boss, Rudi Garcia, may have felt his stomach churning as Candreva prodded home after just seven minutes on the clock, but Mauricio, and later Federico Marchetti’s, dismissal must have soothed his fretfulness. Both sending-offs were wholly avoidable and came as a result of Lazio’s high-intensity, high-pressing approach. Granted, the quality of this Lazio side lies at the top-end of the pitch, but devoid of regular defensive stalwart Stefan De Vrij, Stefan Pioli’s side look increasingly vulnerable when asked to deploy a high defensive line. The attacking verve which has propelled Lazio to within touching distance of automatic Champions League qualification was manifest during the opening minutes of the affair. Candreva drew a smart stop from Inter goalkeeper Stefan Handanovic inside two minutes, before he drifted inside of the 18-yard box and steered home a Felipe Anderson cut-back to notch Lazio into the lead. Hernanes slipped through Mauro Icardi, in acres of room at the corner of the Lazio penalty area, but the Argentine blasted the ball, quite literally, into the south stand. Rodrigo Palacio used his deft movement to stretch the opposition backline and even Hernanes, more famously renowned for his magic in possession, found himself in-behind the Lazio reargued. The latter made full use of his dexterity to deny Miroslav Klose inside the 6-yard box before the former cleared Marco Parolo’s header off the line. It was a frantic opening 45 minutes which was perfectly encapsulated by the drama which unfolded midway through. Rodrigo Palacio was hauled to the floor by Mauricio after a deft lofted ball from Hernanes and, as the last defender, the Brazilian was giving his marching orders by referee Nicola Rizzoli.
