First Japan-Baltics co-pro announced - Screen International

Latvian filmmaker Maris Martinsons will direct the first ever co-production between Japan and the Baltics, Magic Kimono , with Japanese actress Kaori Momoi ( Memoirs Of A Geisha ) heading the cast. Scheduled to shoot in Riga, Latvia and Kobe, Japan from August 15, the tragicomedy is co-produced by Linda Krukle for Latvia’s KrukFilms, Eiko and Jason Gray for Japan’s Loaded Films and Sten Saluveer for Estonia’s Oree Films. Latvian celebrity chef Martins Sirmais will also serve as food consultant on the film. 3m project, which recently passed the UniJapan Co-Production Certificate, will also be backed by Latvian investor Boris Teterev, who recently invested in Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez’ Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. Martinsons and Mamoi previously worked together on Latvia-Hong Kong co-production Amaya (2010) and Latvian-US thriller Oki (2014). Momoi also recently starred in short film Oh Lucy. “Food is an essence that can create understanding and connection between different cultures and thus makes a perfect co-production point,” said Saluveer. Scarecrow Press. 1995. ISBN: 9781461672753,1461672759. 485 pages.

Now in Paperback! Early in 1971, Five Fingers of Death premiered in a New York movie theater. This was America's first look at a Chinese martial arts movie. In Chicago that same year, Duel of the Iron Fist debuted. With the release of Bruce Lee's films, the market exploded. And thus began America's love affair with what is one of the most misunderstood and maligned film genres. The Encyclopedia covers the genre from 1920 to 1994. The genre, however, can be very confusing: films often have several titles, and many of the stars have more than one pseudonym. In an effort to clarify some of the confusion, the authors have included all the information available to them on almost 3,300 films. Each entry includes a listing of the production company, the cast and crew, distributors, running times, reviews with star ratings whenever possible, and alternate film titles. A list of film series and one of the stars' pseudonyms, in addition to a 7,900 name index, are also included. Illustrated.
