SVSU Moot Court does well at regional competition - The Valley Vanguard

SVSU’s Moot Court group once again has students moving onto nationals after the Moot Court Regionals on Friday, Nov. There were 40 teams at the competition, and each team was made up of two partners. The team of Billie DeShone and Mark Babcock, as well as the team of Rob Mass and Rachel Cahill, made it within the Top 8 and now will be going to Long Beach, California, to compete in Moot Court Nationals. The team of Tor Dahl and Connor Hughes placed within the Top 16, but did not qualify for Nationals. The team of Ivan Macias and Katelyn Holihan made it to the second day of competition but also did not qualify for Nationals. Tor Dahl won fifth place Orator and Mark Babcock won 16th place Orator. Taylor Fisher was the Moot Court Regionals Director for Saginaw Valley. Fisher worked alongside SVSU’s Moot Court advisor, Julie Keil, all semester to prepare for this event. “Those judges are selected based upon the fact that they are either judges, attorneys, law students, or former moot courters,” Fisher said. Fisher and Keil also had to order the trophies and facilitate food arrangements, and they then spent their time monitoring the competition during the event. “Countless hours of practice arguing have been put in to preparing for their regional,” Fisher said. He believes that this experience has helped him gain attributes that will help him be successful. “During the argument,” Mass said, “the judges can interrupt your presentation at any time and force you to answer their question or whatever they want, essentially. So you have to be able to deal with that and change your argument on the fly to deal with what it is they want to hear, so it definitely helps with impromptu speaking and thinking on the spot. “Generally, since you have to spend so much time with a lot of people, and those friendships can turn into great professional networking,” Mass said. “I’ve met several people in the area, like lawyers and judges, who will definitely be helpful in the future. Moot Court is not like other classes that a student can take. Not only do students compete, but they also have to put a lot of work into the class outside of it, and even over the summer. According to Fisher, it is more of an in-depth experience that really makes students invest in the outcome at the end of the semester. Source: www.valleyvanguardonline.com
