But recently, I decided to try going out for the occasional civilized lunch, one in which there is full service and conversation with an adult companion. BABANI’S Tucked away in a downtown outpost near St. Joseph’s Hospital, Babani’s serves one of the best lunch deals in town. Sub the restaurant’s fantastically tart dowjic lemon soup for $2. If you haven’t had Kurdish food before, the Kurdish Salad is a hearty, flavorful mix of some of the best flavors the cuisine has to offer. The Chicken Tawa might look humble, but the potatoes and falling-off-the-bone tender chicken braised in a bright, citrusy sauce make up what might be the most soulful lunch plate downtown. Barrio has decent tacos, and their lunch special, which includes two tacos of the day, two kinds of salsa, a little dish of guacamole and some freshly fried tortilla chips, is a great deal at just $10. The rich, earthy, guajillo chili... Details: 235 E. Sixth St. St. Paul. BLACK DOG CAFE This little bohemian cafe just added a full kitchen and has expanded its menu a bit to include a burger and some fries and a few other options like a crunchy, tasty fried chicken sandwich ($11). When Warsaw Ghetto-escapee Sarah visits the Venice Ghetto she happens to witness a group of actors staging a dress rehearsal of The Merchant of Venice, upon this chance encounter Sarah is confronted by the terrible story of 'The Jew' which touches her own life. Through this emotive and provocative play Julia Pascal re-works Shakespeare’s controversial text, transposing the fervent theme of anti-Semitism raised by the bard, playing it out in a contemporary setting. Challenging the portrayal of 'The Jew' that for many years has dominated society's attitudes towards the Jewish people, Pascal ambitiously places her own text within Shakespeare's classic, producing a thoroughly thought-provoking and original work.
