My View by Robyn Sassen : “Annabel Linder Tells It Like It Is” packs hefty nostalgic punches. Annabel Linder’s musical account of her life begins a little slowly, with jokes and repartee you might have heard before, and at some point you begin quietly to despair that that’s all there’ll be. But when she presents herself as the unexpected... Linder is one of the South African stage’s true treasures. Wading through the detritus of broken dreams and marriages that stood in her way, she made herself and she remade herself again and again and as many times as it was necessary to give herself the courage to stay afloat, onboard and onstage. Shifting from a cabaret artist to an actress, to a television star and back again, Linder first experienced the thrill and fear of workshopping a production in the latter years of her career, with her role in Sylvaine Strike’s ‘The Table’, last year. The whole rambunctious tale of love lost, love found, ideals shattered and awards won, and many, many productions, is told with a familiarity and a gentleness that will make you feel as though you are sitting in Linder’s lounge. this woman who can so easily slip into the endearing Yiddish-tinctured accent so specific to a certain generation of Jewish South Africans, this is her: an actress who bearing more than just a physical resemblance to Britain’s celebrated Julie... The sad upshot in this tale is the fact that this country has proved, time and again, to its audiences and its would-be audiences that support of the arts is low in government priorities, and that this woman who deserves the richest of... The show gets better and better as Linder unwinds a litany of beautiful and sometimes difficult memories about her illustrious and prolific career. She offers a rendition of the song written for Sophie Tucker in 1925, that is second to none: all too often renditions of ‘My Yiddishe Mammeh,’ which Tucker made to soar on the local hit parades of her time can be flecked with the taint of too... The pinnacle of the show is in the final four numbers, where Linder introduces her husband, jazz clarinettist and veteran popular music composer, Sam Sklair. Source: www.artlink.co.za
