Mandela's Main (Movie) Man - Wall Street Journal

The 39-year-old actor has been featured in two Mandela films of note: "Invictus," the 2009 film with Morgan Freeman as President Mandela, and the coming "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" with British actor Idris Elba in the title role. In "Invictus," Mr. Kgoroge plays President Mandela's intense security chief, Jason Tshabalala, who bristles at being told to build a multiracial team of presidential bodyguards from the remnants of South Africa's feared apartheid security apparatus. In "Mandela," he steps into the role of Walter Sisulu, one of the top leaders of South Africa's anti-apartheid struggle. In the latter movie, a sweeping biopic, Mr. Kgoroge ages about a half-century over two hours. Both roles provided a vantage point for how talented actors inhabited the monumental figure of Mandela, whose 27 years in prison made him almost an abstraction for a later generation of South African activists, including Mr. Kgoroge. Portraying Mr. Mandela at different stages of their careers also appeared to shape how Messrs. Freeman and Elba's approached their roles, according to Mr. Kgoroge. He says Mr. Freeman, who plays the presidential Mandela, didn't mix much with the largely South African cast of "Invictus. " (The film—about Mr. Mandela's support for the mostly white 1995 South African rugby squad—also starred Matt Damon, and was directed by Clint Eastwood). "The only time we met him was when someone shouted 'Standing by. ' " said Mr. Kgoroge. Elba, who was well-known for his work on the HBO series "The Wire" but still seeking a breakout movie role, it was different. In their spare time, he and Mr. Kgoroge played soccer together, sparred in a boxing ring and walked the streets of Cape Town, where the film was shot. "It was like, Idris would tell me, 'too much Tony in the last scene,'" Mr. Kgoroge says. Kgoroge has appeared in other big productions, including "Hotel Rwanda" with Don Cheadle, "Blood Diamond" with Leonardo DiCaprio and "Lord of War" with Nicholas Cage. The actor grew up in Bloemfontein, a stronghold of South Africa's white Afrikaner population. In the dying days of apartheid—yet years before Mr. Mandela's release from prison—Mr. Kgoroge became a dedicated activist. The ideas of passive resistance and racial reconciliation promoted by Mr. Mandela and others, Mr. Kgoroge says, didn't mean much to those protesting on streets. Source: www.wsj.com
