The Many Faces of Jesse James

September 5, 1847 a baby boy was born to Robert James and his wife Zerelda James in Clay County, Missouri. Unbeknownst to his parents, this boy would become one of the most iconic outlaws in U. S. history. Jesse Woodson James to this day has one of the most impressive criminal careers. After joining the Confederate army, Jesse and his brother were haunted by the traumatic events of the Civil War and began filling in the void. No stranger to guerrilla warfare Jesse was a member of “Bloody Bill” Anderson’s gang at the tender age of 16. He and his brother Frank eventually began their own gang, the James-Younger gang, becoming the clans most active members. Responsible for more than 20 bank robberies between 1860 and 1862, the gang became the most feared outlaws in the American West. Feared by his own men, it seemed nobody could slow the outlaw until April 3, 1882. Robert Ford, one of James’ own gang members, shot him in the back of the head hoping to receive compensation for his action. Jesse James became a celebrity in life, and legendary in death. Decades have passed since the days of Jesse James, yet we are still enamored by him. ” There is no evidence to suggest James was helping anyone other than himself during his conquests, but Hollywood has set out to make him seem as such. Being that he became legendary in death all on his own, Hollywood cinema salivated over the cow-bad-boy. Films were made yearly depicting James in various shades of good and evil.
