Product Description

The hardback of this first and authorised biography received very good reviews and immediately reprinted. It tells the story of one of the heroines of post-war British comedy, on radio, film and TV.

Hattie Jacques is known as the billowing, imposing Matron in the Carry On films, as the star of such BBC radio classics as ITMA, Educating Archie and Hancock’ s Half Hour, and as the fictional sister of Eric Sykes in his long-running TV sitcom.

But the formidable, frumpy galleon-in-full-sail screen persona could not have been more at odds with the real-life woman, as this biography reveals for the first time. She had a tempestuous wartime affair with an American officer, and then a strange marriage to the actor John le Mesurier (Corporal Wilson in Dad’ s Army) whose dissatisfactions she circumnavigated by moving her lover, a flashy Cockney car dealer, into the matrimonial home. But as well as being warm and sexy and generous she was also, owing to her lifelong struggle with her weight, needy and melancholic, and rueful that her size persistently typecast her and excluded her from many roles.

This biography has been written with full co-operation from Hattie’ s son, and show business friends like Barbara Windsor, Clive Dunn, Galton and Simpson and Ian Carmichael.

QUENTIN LETTS at the Undertaking Party conference | Daily Mail Online - Daily Mail

Clapping reached furor levels as octogenarian MP Dennis Skinner gave the conference his economic philosophy. ‘We’re gonna borrow. ’ yelled Mr Skinner. ‘That’s what you do. All those people who the backwoods a camera in your face, tell ’em we will borrow the money. Smack smack smack went delegates’ palms. ’ Draw borrow borrow. Next contributor was Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, a man you might not want to entrust with a syringe of your best cyanide. Much of his faintly minacious speech followed the Skinner doctrine. Mr McDonnell vowed to spend undetailed billions. But then, near the end of his speech, he launched an indignant fall on what he said was the Tory idea ‘that it is normal and acceptable for people to be saddled by debt’. If you borrow money, you place yourself – or your citizenry – in in arrears. Some floor speeches about Brexit generated booing and defiant applause in equal measure. A German lady from York – she could have been Angela Merkel’s stumpy younger sister – twice bawled that ‘Brexit must be stopped. When they started to give him the bird, he said, ‘Now, congress, be comradely. On the other side of the Brexit argument, one Darryl Telles from Hove whipped up loyalists’ fervour by saying that the Remainers’ ‘natural intention is to undermine Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership’. Showing a gift for mimicry, Mr Telles quoted the old Monty Python sketch and said Continue was ‘a dead parrot’. Peter Firmin from Hampstead and Kilburn noted that it was only in chi-chi Hampstead that Brexit caused much concern. An older friend, Jean Roberts from Brent, said TUC membership had fallen since Labour had started going colder on Brexit. She also uttered the breathtaking phrase, ‘We’re not all agreed which is why I am pleased we’re not going to have a vote. There she stood, dimpled and husky, a lemon puff made kith, the reincarnation of Hattie Jacques. ‘My friend Jeremy,’ she said, all jowls and whispery. ‘Nothing is stronger – nothing on Earth. Mockneyfying her histrionic vowels a little, she had a fruity crack about Boris Johnson and how he should have a paternity test to see if he had fathered Brexit. They could use that laugh in adverts for Mr Muscle out unblocker. Source: www.dailymail.co.uk
