Japanese poetry is well-known for its clarity and concision, and Narrow Road to the Interior and Hojoki are two of the best-loved, and most intensely Japanese, works of their kind; famous for their beautiful, delicate verse and subtle insight into the human condition. It has been said of Narrow Road that "it was as if the very soul of Japan had itself written it." It takes the form of a travel diary, and traces the poet’s journey from Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to the northern interior. Hojoki, a much earlier work written by Chomei, a Buddhist hermit, is essentially a meditation on the transience of the world. Read by the famous classical Japanese actor Togo Igawa, the full beauty of its ancient cadences and rhythms is drawn out. Also includes detailed notes on Narrow Road to the Interior.
Product Description
This is General Hasegawa's (Togo Igawa) hero dagger from the 2003 period piece The Last Samurai. Near the beginning of the film, Nathen Algren (Tom Cruise) and an army led by General Hasegawa lose a battle to an army of samurai. After the loss, in order to preserve his honor, General Hasegawa stabs himself with this blade before Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe) finishes the job with a sword. This dagger is made of resin and crafted to mock a metal blade. The hilt features small, divot-like designs and is wrapped in a piece of twined lace for superior grip. The black sheath is made of plastic and there is a piece of lace looped through it which could be tied to a belt. The dagger measures 14.5" (37cm) and is in great condition with mild wear due to production use.

Interview with Togo Igawa for The Hedgehog premiere in London

Curzon Mayfair, London, 2 September 2011.

They wanted to show me that this life has nothing to offer but death.

I’d be hard-pressed to present the case that the picture is an unsung classic, a masterpiece waiting to be re-discovered and re-appraised, but it has certainly been given short shrift. As many column inches have gone into reviewing its insane budget as the picture itself. There is much to enjoy in this beautifully rendered, unusually solemn fantasy and its.
