Eric Clapton, Royal Albert Hall, review: 'like a pair of musical slippers ... - Telegraph.co.uk

Eric Clapton may have just turned 70, but the legendary bluesman found a fan of the most unlikely hue at this, his first of seven shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall. In an audience largely made up of rotund baby boomers, Binky Felstead, the 24-year-old star of reality show Made in Chelsea, could barely contain her excitement at being there. ‘OHHHH CLAPTON – you rock our worlds,’ Binky told her 686,000 Instagram followers as the lights dimmed. Despite some baffled comments from her online acolytes (“Who actually is he. ”), Binky’s presence did at least bring a suggestion of youth to proceedings. Over the night, there was something for blues purists and commercial Clapton fans alike. The former were treated to covers galore, the best of which was a raucous rendition of Robert Johnson’s Cross Road Blues. The audience’s spontaneous rendition of Happy Birthday was genuinely touching, despite reminding everyone that Clapton is now in his eighth decade. In fact, a strange air of mortality hung over the show, even prior to BB King’s passing. Clapton ended with a blazing cover of High Time We Went by Joe Cocker, who died last year. There is now, of course, the tantalising prospect of heartfelt tributes to King in the shows to come. Clapton was comfortable (he’s played the venue around 200 times), the audience was comfortable, the band was comfortable. But it was also special because it was Clapton. And he’s getting on. If the sad passing of King told us anything, it was that Clapton and his generation - Keith Richards and Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck - won’t be here forever. And then Binky will really have something to tell her followers about. Source: www.telegraph.co.uk
