If only the “Say Yes to the Dress” brides had a fairy godmother. They wouldn’t need so many TV producers and sales clerks and designers and friends and sisters and moms to help them find the perfect dress. Cinderella does that twice in her namesake musical this week at the Des Moines Civic Center — spinning first into a frothy white dress the size of a cloud, then a sleeker get-up in gold — and it really does seem like magic. The presto-change-o costumes are the best effects in a national tour that is long on lovely but a little short on surprises. Led by the appealing, honey-voiced Paige Faure, “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella” is a fairly straightforward re-telling of the old story, where the nice girl gets an extreme makeover and catches herself a prince. Book writer Douglas Carter Beane and director Mark Brokaw added a few minor twists in this version, to make the prince (the wholesome Andy Huntington Jones) more interesting and one of the wicked stepsisters (Kaitlyn Davidson) not so wicked, but... Rodgers’ music, too, is a throwback to an earlier era, when characters called time-outs from the plot to more fully express their emotions. They sound lush and un-rushed (above conductor Valerie Gebert’s mostly local orchestra), but most of the numbers are predictable, such as Ella’s daydreamy “In My Own Little Corner” and the fairy godmother’s pep talk, “There’s Music in You”... The other stepsister (Aymee Garcia) gets a juicier song when she and the other jilted ladies from the ball slip out of their uncomfortable shoes and grouse about perfect little Miss You-Know-Who. Sioux City native Antoine Smith does his home state proud as the bell-ringing, booming-voiced herald who delivers the show’s funniest line, about the search for the glass-slippered mystery woman in addition to an upcoming election between the... “I’ll be back at eleven with local weather and sports. But what the news really needs is a few good villains. The prince’s chancellor is only mildly nasty, and Ella’s stepmother (Beth Glover) is bossy and vain but hardly more than any of the “Real Housewives. Without much villainy to do, the formerly wicked relatives fall back on cartoonish voices and silly antics that veer into Disney Channel territory. It might be fine for the kids in the crowd — and on Tuesday there were many in tiaras and tulle — but a little buffoonery goes a long way. Source: www.desmoinesregister.com
