As minutes rise, Pietrangelo becoming master of rest - STLtoday.com

PITTSBURGH • The Blues had an optional morning skate before Wednesday’s game with the Penguins, something that has become increasingly common on game days for the Blues. Among those not on the ice was defenseman Alex Pietrangelo. That’s no surprise, because Pietrangelo is logging large amounts of minutes in games. After playing a career-high 32 minutes, 54 seconds Saturday in the overtime game against Detroit, he played 28:59 on Monday against Buffalo. Pietrangelo is second in the league in minutes played this season at 27:24, 15 seconds behind Ryan Suter of Minnesota. Though the season is young, that’s two minutes more than he has averaged in any season so far in this pro career. To make that possible, Pietrangelo has had to learn how to take it easy between games. “I’m doing the best I can,” he said. It’s a learning process, too, how to manage your rest, how to manage your days off, how to manage your time to prepare for that. … I do extra work with the trainers, get an extra massage, take an extra nap. Blues coach Ken Hitchcock doesn’t want to play Pietrangelo that much — “We’ve seen Petro be the best player on the ice for either team and then all of a sudden at 25 minutes hit the wall,” he said — but with the Blues’ penchant for tight games,... Also, the need to keep Pietrangelo on the ice in the penalty kill. he’s second in the NHL in shorthanded minutes. “It’s not ideal,” Hitchcock said, “but when you’re taking as many penalties as we are, it becomes necessary. There’s not a plan that we want to put forward that has that in it. It’s not a plan that has a good ending. We’ve got to help him by not taking as many minor penalties. By playing more 5-on-5, we can manage his minutes a lot better. Forward Ryan Reaves, who had played in just three of the Blues’ previous 10 games as he has been not one, but two steps slow, after a training camp injury, was back in the lineup on Wednesday, moving back onto the fourth line. Hitchcock said Reaves was back in because he gave the team an edge, but it will be up to Reaves now to keep the job. “He’s had very much an up and down season, most of it based on health,” Hitchcock said. “He’s healthy now, he feels good. He has to continue to maintain a fitness level from the injury and then keep up to pace in the games. We think he can bring a good energy. If he’s up to speed, he can bring a good energy. With Reaves back in the lineup, Scott Gomez, Scottie Upshall and Joel Edmundson were the healthy scratches. Source: www.stltoday.com

  • Lecture Notes on Turbulence

    2014. ISBN: 1783263601,9781783263608. 300 pages.

This textbook is based on the lectures on turbulence given in the Masters programme at Universit Pierre et Marie Curie and Ecole Polytechnique. The book covers the classic topics on turbulence that includes: introduction to fundamentals of statistical and spectral analysis, dimensional analysis, Kolmogorov theory and energy cascade, the hierarchy of turbulent flows ranging from isotropic turbulence to non-homogeneous shear flows, and extension to compressible turbulence illuminated using Kovasznay model decomposition. A substantial section of this volume is devoted to exercises and problems to guide readers through the book in applying the theories learnt to the problems provided. Furthermore, all-important exercises and problems are first presented in the usual short "workout" fashion, followed by the full solution to demonstrate the process. Turbulence is a multidisciplinary subject that cut across engineering and earth sciences; covering areas such as pollution control, global warming and acoustic pollution. Therefore, in all chapters, the usual Navier Stokes equations supplemented with a passive scalar equation will be used to serve as a simplified model for pollutant or temperature, intended to give readers a comprehensive view of turbulent scalar field dynamics. Lecture Notes on Turbulence: Problems and Solutions provides readers with a comprehensive introduction to turbulence dynamics and modelling, and will be of interest to Masters students, PhD students and experienced professionals who wish to get an insight into the field of turbulence.
