The headline “Georgia Man Gets Ticket for Driving While Eating Cheeseburger,” piqued my interest. According to the Associated Press story, the man claimed an officer saw him eating the cheeseburger from two miles down the road. The man was cited under Georgia’s distracted driving law, with “eating while driving,” in the remarks section of the ticket. In sharing his personal opinion, Mike Gentry, Harker Heights Police Department’s chief, said without knowing the specifics of the case, the driver could have exhibited foolish driving behaviors. “We have statutes in Texas, such as reckless driving or weaving, we can cite for the individual offense,” Gentry said. Not specifically for eating a hamburger, but the manifestations. Gentry said it shouldn’t be to the point of making a criminal of drivers who carefully eat or drink in a vehicle, and made a valid point to ask why cup holders are in vehicles. I’ve also observed employees at an area hamburger establishment in Killeen ask if you’ll eat in your car so they can package your fare appropriately. However, I do not condone distracted while driving habits of any kind. During times of gobbling a cheeseburger though stoplights during busy workdays, I’ve had to make the difficult decision to let a gob of ketchup or mayonnaise, pickle or tomato fall into my lap. In a December 2013 report to Congress, the U. S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated more than 3,000 deaths and approximately 400,000 injuries due to distracted driving. The report identified common distractions as: electronic devices, smoking, eating and drinking, reaching for objects, grooming activities, reacting to an insect inside the vehicle, reading and writing and interacting with passengers. Through a 100-Car Study conducted at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, NHTSA data indicated odds of an accident increased by 8. 82 times more when reaching for a moving object. 7 times more by looking at an outside object. 38 times more by reading. 27 times more by dialing with a handheld device. 25 times more by inserting or retrieving a CD. 1. 57 times more by eating. 38 times more by reaching for a non-moving.
