Contra Costa Civic Theatre in El Cerrito will celebrate its 55th anniversary with a gala event from 7 to 10 p. m. May 2. The event will be held at the company's theater at 951 Pomona Ave. A no-host bar will feature a signature cocktail, "the CCCTini, created especially for this event. And because no theater gala would be complete without a performance, "The evening features a star-studded musical spectacular, directed by Daren A. C. Carollo and featuring some of your favorite CCCT performers including Tom Reardon, Jessica... STUDENTS HELP ON EARTH DAY: One of the many busy work party sites in El Cerrito during the city's Earth Day observance on April 18 was at the library branch on Stockton Avenue. Members of the Rotary Club of El Cerrito, the El Cerrito Library Foundation and staff from the branch teamed to tend the grounds in what is hoped will be an annual partnership, said volunteer Al Miller. Joining them were high school students from the Contra Costa chapter of People to People, an ambassador program that engages in community service projects on trips overseas. The chapter had been looking for a local service project when it got word of the El Cerrito work parties and 10 students showed up on short notice to take part in work at the library, said teacher and chapter adviser Nicole Raasch. BERKELEY POETRY: A free program of readings of verse by poets who have called Berkeley home will be held at 1 p. m. April 25 at the Berkeley North Branch Library, 1170 The Alameda. Local poets Susan Cohen and Meryl Natchez will read from poems by Chana Bloch, Bob Hass, Louise Glück, Allen Ginsberg and others at the event held in celebration of National Poetry Month. BIG BAND TEA DANCE: Hugh White grew up in El Cerrito and got his start as a musician there while still a child in the 1930s, performing with a group at the greyhound racing track where El Cerrito Plaza is now. White, a lifelong West County resident who plays with his group at popular weekly tea dances in San Pablo, returns to El Cerrito to perform at a tea dance from 1 to 4 p. m. May 3.
