This book, 'R. Caldecott's Picture Book No. 1', is a collection of the first four stories he published in the Caldecott 'Picture Books' series. These were published in pairs, every year, from 1878 until his death in 1886. Stories compiled in this volume are The Diverting History of John Gilpin, The House That Jack Built, An Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog, The Babes in the Wood.

Randolph Caldecott was one of the most important British illustrators of the Victorian period. He transformed the world of decorated children’s books, with his delicate yet considered drawings and imaginative subject choices. Caldecott selected all the stories and rhymes he illustrated (and occasionally wrote) and frequently added his delightful style and humour to the stories himself.

Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s classics and fairy tales – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Jack Gilpin: A beloved priest in New Milford, but also a devoted actor - Danbury News Times

People spot him and think they know him. It’s easy for the folks who see him at the pulpit at St. John’s Episcopal Church in New Milford, where he’s the priest. But for others it can take some time. people think I did their taxes or handled their divorce,” the Rev. Jack Gilpin said. “If you have cable TV I show up sooner or later because I’ve been on ‘Law & Order’ and I had a recurring role on ‘Kate & Allie’ — I played the guy who lived upstairs. Gilpin has also been in about 30 movies. “I was in ’Funny Farm’ with Chevy Chase,” he said. That’s in addition to his live theater work and recent gig on the CBS series “Madam Secretary. ” He also just won a role on “Billions,” a new Showtime series. “I’ve mostly done theater, but most of my money has been made in films and television, where you get paid more,” he said. Gilpin said people are often surprised to learn he’s a priest as well as an actor, but he sees nothing unusual about it. He said things he’s learned as an actor, such as making the words on a page come alive, are useful at church. “Acting helps a lot with priestly duties in trying to see the truth and responding to it in the moment,” he said. “Trying to find the truth that is in a script is, in essence, no different than taking a chunk of the Bible and reading it over and over. It’s like doing a rubbing — the truth emerges. On the other hand, Gilpin feels his acting chops are as good as ever because he performs the liturgy each week. it’s a script that has to be made new every time. But Gilpin said he’s passionate about both roles, so he works it all out, along with making time for his family. “My church likes the fact that I’m also an actor. And the Screen Actors Guild pays for my health insurance and my family’s. The church likes that, too. Flora Quammie is a longtime member of St. John’s. “The Jack we see on TV is not the Jack we see at church,” she said. “Lots of times he plays mean, nasty people. he’s a people person. Quammie said folks at church also enjoy that Gilpin sometimes works stories about his acting life into his sermons. “He’ll share an experience he had, or something he learned from it. It makes him (seem) more human. Gilpin was into theater long before he felt the calling to be a priest. His first role was playing the Easter Bunny when he was 5. He’s always loved the arts, and attended several universities, including Harvard, where he was an editor on the Harvard Lampoon. Source: www.newstimes.com

This first full-length study of the cattle tick eradication program in the United States offers a new perspective on the fate of the yeomanry in the twentieth-century South during a period when state and federal governments were both increasing and centralizing their authority. As Claire Strom relates the power struggles that complicated efforts to wipe out the Boophilus tick, she explains the motivations and concerns of each group involved, including large- and small-scale cattle farmers, scientists, and officials at all levels of government. In the remote rural South--such as the piney woods of south Georgia and north Florida--resistance to mandatory treatment of cattle was unusually strong and sometimes violent. Cattle often ranged free, and their owners raised them mostly for local use rather than faraway markets. Cattle farmers in such areas, shows Strom, perceived a double threat in tick eradication mandates. In addition to their added costs, eradication schemes, with their top-down imposition of government expertise, were anathema to the yeomanry’s notions of liberty. Strom contextualizes her southern focus within the national scale of the cattle industry, discussing, for instance, the contentious place of cattle drives in American agricultural history. Because Mexico was the primary source of potential tick reinfestation, Strom examines the political and environmental history of the Rio Grande, giving the book a transnational perspective. Debates about the political and economic culture of small farmers have tended to focus on earlier periods in American history. Here Strom shows that pockets of yeoman culture survived into the twentieth century and that these communities had the power to block (if only temporarily) the expansion of the American state.
