Product Description

The remarkable story of the Langbourne brothers is picked up in 1893. Morris, just 17, makes the bold and risky decision to head north, deeper into Africa. Morris and his younger brother, David, thus embark on a new adventure - to set up business as traders.

After walking through the African bush for three months with six wagons laden with goods and hardly a track to guide them, Morris and David stop in the settlement of KoBulawayo and build their first warehouse out of wooden poles and mud. Realizing a radical change in plan is needed, Morris devises a new business strategy that propels them toward success. A political impasse rapidly develops between the European administration and the ruthless King Lobengula's massive Ndebele army. A brief and savage war erupts between the two powers; the brothers' business is unavoidably affected, and David is hunted by the Ndebele army when he tries to rescue a friend. Undaunted, but wiser to the perils of Africa, Morris sets his mind to recover their pride, their reputation, and their business.

Based on a true story and actual events.

Jenkin's aspire springs eternal - Independent Online

The second image in the 6th Artscape Spring Drama Season, and the first full production, will be launched in the Artscape Arena on October 16 with The Gloom Doctor, a new play by Juliet Jenkin. "A close friend of mine is a doctor and we were living together when she was at med school and doing her community employment," says Jenkin. "I was interested in what being a doctor in South Africa is like. It has many points of reference and deals with relations, violence and hope. The play is directed by Liz Mills and stars Alex Halligey in the title role as Catherine, Adrienne Pearce plays her origin, Adrian Galley her father, Tinarie van Wyk Loots plays her veterinarian sister, Margot, and Thato Cele plays the role of... Catherine returns to her parents' household in Pietermaritzburg after reaching a crisis point in her career. The lines of communication are strained until Benedict's arrival shakes things up. "I like to imagine that all my work is different," she says. I hope that audiences will be moved by it. It's a play about violence, but it's not a violent play. It's about the value in determination ways to communicate to each other when it's most difficult to. I hope that people see parts of themselves reflected onstage. All my plays are about hope. Jenkin has written plays including The Boy Who Strike down From The Roof, Venom, More South African Deep Freezing and Library. Even after having all of these performed on stages around the fatherland, she still gets very nervous on opening night. "There are some amazing people who are staging the play," she says. "Even so, there's a huge amount of reverence involved in seeing your work onstage for the first time. Just the thought of opening night makes me want to act seven Myprodols. Source:
