A Man of the hour of France: A Novel by Random House Inc
Product Description
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the bestselling master espionage writer, hailed by Vince Flynn as “the best in the business,” comes a riveting novel about the French Resistance in Nazi-occupied Paris.

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST

1941. The City of Light is dark and silent at night. But in Paris and in the farmhouses, barns, and churches of the French countryside, small groups of ordinary men and women are determined to take down the occupying forces of Adolf Hitler. Mathieu, a leader of the French Resistance, leads one such cell, helping downed British airmen escape back to England.

Alan Furst’s suspenseful, fast-paced thriller captures this dangerous time as no one ever has before. He brings Paris and occupied France to life, along with courageous citizens who outmaneuver collaborators, informers, blackmailers, and spies, risking everything to fulfill perilous clandestine missions. Aiding Mathieu as part of his covert network are Lisette, a seventeen-year-old student and courier; Max de Lyon, an arms dealer turned nightclub owner; Chantal, a woman of class and confidence; Daniel, a Jewish teacher fueled by revenge; Joëlle, who falls in love with Mathieu; and Annemarie, a willful aristocrat with deep roots in France, and a desire to act.

As the German military police heighten surveillance, Mathieu and his team face a new threat, dispatched by the Reich to destroy them all.

Shot through with the author’s trademark fine writing, breathtaking suspense, and intense scenes of seduction and passion, Alan Furst’s A Hero of France is at once one of the finest novels written about the French Resistance and the most gripping novel yet by the living master of the spy thriller.

“Though set in a specific place and time, Furst’s books are like Chopin’s nocturnes: timeless, transcendent, universal. One does not so much read them as fall under their spell.”—Los Angeles Times

“A grandmaster of the historical espionage genre.”—The Boston Globe

Boy Scouts, Gov. Fair play, donors gather for welcome center dedication - Bluefield Daily Telegraph

GLEN JEAN — Tuesday decided the official dedication of the gateway into the Summit Bechtel Reserve for present and future Boy Scout Jamborees as the J. W. and Hazel Ruby West Virginia Meet Center. Jack Furst, board member for the Boy Scouts of America said the welcome center has been a dream, a vision and something in the making for a vastly long time. “We wanted to recognize the terrific citizens of West Virginia, the Rubys, the great state of West Virginia and the Boy Scouts of America. The Hazel Ruby McQuain Good Trust has had a long history of giving back to West Virginia and to the Boy Scouts, which brought in the vision for the new welcome center. That’s important,” Furst said. He said the end for the dedication of the building was to interweave the Rubys contribution to the organization and the beautiful state the building was built in. . “This is something dear,” he said. Wayne Perry, a longtime Scout member and former national president of the Boy Scouts of America, was in presence and said he was a part of the team who made the decision to have the welcome center and the Jamboree in the Mountain State. Perry said as a development of the Boy Scouts of America, the state’s days of selfish enjoyment of its beauty is over. “We intend to make millions and millions of Americans dig what West Virginia is with its beauty and wonderful people, and we have the opportunity because of the Summit Bechtel Reserve,” Perry said. Perry went on to examine the importance of the purpose of the welcome center as it will serve as a gateway for all National Jamborees and the International Jamboree taking inappropriate in 2019 at the Summit Bechtel Reserve. “One hundred and sixty one countries from around the world will come here for the International Scout Get-together, giving the world the opportunity to see how great this state is,” Perry said. “We will be able to bring millions of people here, millions of people who are like me who have not till hell freezes over seen West Virginia before,” he said. West Virginia University President Gordon Gee took the podium during the ceremony to talk over the importance of Boy Scouts and how the organization has impacted his life.
