With signature win, Paulsboro makes statement in loaded S.J. Group 1 field - NJ.com

It was clear coming into the year that just qualifying for the South Jersey Group 1 playoffs could be problematic, even for teams who traditionally make it into the field. Paulsboro entered the weekend No. 6 in what would be an eight-team field and was hosting an undefeated Haddonfield team. A loss would have made next Saturday’s game at Haddon Heights almost a must-win. But the Red Raiders made their inclusion almost a formality and probably guaranteed a home game or two as well with a 36-22 win over the Bulldwags. Quarterback Kyle Jones threw four touchdown passes, three to Emmanuel Simon , and ran for another and the Red Raiders took it to Haddonfield from the opening 12-play touchdown drive in an impressive performance. In arguably one of the deepest fields in South Jersey, Paulsboro has joined defending champion Pennsville as the teams to beat. “We want to get back to the Group 1 championship and be the last team standing. Even long-time coach Glenn Howard, who often says he is only concerned with the upcoming game, acknowledged the he paid some attention to the Group 1 log-jam and the need to secure a significant win. “You just try to take one game at a time, but yeah, after losing the first game and Group 1 loaded with a lot of good teams and very competitive, we needed something to boost our power points and keep the momentum going,” admitted Howard. “We would have hated to drop this game today and fall back to 3-2, so 4-1 is definitely a lot better than 3-2. ”. In addition to the huge power-point boost, the Red Raiders gained a lot of confidence beating a team that rolled over them by at... “We’ve just limited our mistakes (since the opening week), we practice hard, no more fooling around and we’ve gotten better every week,” said Simon. Added Howard: “The kids have been working hard, putting in a lot of time and the coaches have been doing a great job. We’re just trying to be precise on each drill each day and working on what we’re trying to accomplish and do the things we need to do to be an all-around better ballclub. “Haddonfield is a very well-coached team. The last couple years, they just had really, really good ballclubs. Source: highschoolsports.nj.com
