I was first introduced to the jam band phenomenon by my older brother Jackie, when he came home from college. The very first thing he did on his first visit home was to play me a tape called “Blues Traveler. I had no idea what instrument the guy was playing, but it sounded amazing. Even after my brother told me it was a harmonica, I still wasn’t sure. It sounded like an accordion or organ. I had never heard a harmonica sound like that before. I was used to Bob Dylan or Neil Young blowing and sucking sloppy chords on a harmonica strapped to their neck while they played guitar. Then he played me a bootleg of a band called the Spin Doctors. They had played on his back porch, and they let him record it all. I had heard Grateful Dead allowed bootlegs before, but this was super impressive. I had seen the Grateful Dead at Giant’s Stadium, where I also saw the Who and Pink Floyd. The idea of a band playing on your back porch, and a good band at that, was beyond my comprehension. Soon I was being introduced to bands like Max Creek, the Zen Tricksters, the Authority and New Potato Caboose. New bands that were playing old school psychedelic rock. People remember watching the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, or where they were when the Space Shuttle blew up or when the Berlin wall came down. What I remember is where I was the first time I heard a Phish song. It wasn’t even Phish singing it. It was during an overnight field trip to the Catskill Mountains for the Advanced Geology class during my senior year of high school. It was the fall of 1990 and though I had already been introduced to some newer bands, my favorites were still the old bands. Real music. Not like the pop and rap that was on the radio. Grunge music, or more specifically, Nirvana, had not been widely introduced to the public yet. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction and Primus were starting to make a scene for themselves, but they were all a little heavy for my liking. Only the real alternative kids, and only a small group of kids were truly alternative at that point, even knew who they were. They were good, but definitely not my thing at all. Dance music and rap dominated pop music and it looked like it was going to be the future of music, whether we liked it or not. Sting and Paul Simon were still releasing good music. I didn’t know it yet, but I needed Phish. Source: Czuch's Blog
