The Vital Writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson (Modern Library Classics) by Modern Library
Product Description
Introduction by Mary Oliver
Commentary by Henry James, Robert Frost, Matthew Arnold, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and Henry David Thoreau

The definitive collection of Emerson’s major speeches, essays, and poetry, The Essential Writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson chronicles the life’s work of a true “American Scholar.” As one of the architects of the transcendentalist movement, Emerson embraced a philosophy that championed the individual, emphasized independent thought, and prized “the splendid labyrinth of one’s own perceptions.” More than any writer of his time, he forged a style distinct from his European predecessors and embodied and defined what it meant to be an American. Matthew Arnold called Emerson’s essays “the most important work done in prose.”

A Costwold Romance - Death of Tintagiles / London Philharmonic Choir - London Symphony Orchestra - Richard Hickox, direction
Amazon.com
The bustling cantata "Cotswold Romance" came into being as part of Ralph Vaughan Williams's attempt to script a major opera, one of national scope. Hugh the Drover, completed in 1914 and first performed in 1924, was deemed less than a success, in part because of a pivotal boxing scene. So Vaughan Williams extracted "Cotswold" as the 34-plus minute cantata, collected here with the incidental music for Maurice Maeterlinck's play Death of Tintagiles. Richard Hickox helps the cantata shine by drawing on the British folk song elements that Vaughan Williams invoked. The role of Mary is performed by soprano Rosa Mannion, and Hugh's character is sung by Matthew Brook. While both perform excellently, the crux of the cantata is the role of the voluble London Philarmonic Choir and the downright exuberant London Symphony Orchestra. Just as the original opera chronicled Hugh's travails, from love to pugilism to the stocks to freedom and, again, love, so too does the cantata. It's an altogether exciting piece of work, capturing so many elements of Vaughan Williams's oeuvre and still staying well outside the usual, what with the narrative progressions and the chorus's pivotally dramatic role. "The Death of Tintagiles" closes the CD with 14-plus minutes of far more foreboding music. --Andrew Bartlett

Brooklyn Baby - Double Plaid

Pop culture has taught me that Brooklyn is full of hipsters, but all that I saw on my trip were very very expensive brownstones and apartments. In fact, my friend and I were extremely entertained by and engrossed in checking the rent for each of the houses that we passed. Let's just say that this trip dampened my desire to live in NYC. just for comparison, my rent in Houston (sharing a massive 2000 sq foot apartment) was $360. Also, my sudden curiosity towards housing prices and house-fronts made me realize that I've gotten old. when I was little, I hated house-hunting with my parents and visiting furniture stores (I always laid down in the fake beds. Ah, growing up. Source: Another Beautiful Thing
