At least someone, somewhere, involved in this disposable Ape Man entry bothered to read the famous Edgar Rice Burroughs books on which the character is based. What was done with that information, unfortunately, amounts to nothing. Tarzan (vacantly handsome Casper Van Dien) and Jane (nondescript Jane March) head back to the jungle homeland and encounter pillaging baddies led by Steven Waddington (used better as a more complex nasty in The Last of the Mohicans). Director Carl Schenkel's film gives Tarzan back his long-absent status as an articulate gentleman, and it contains elements of Burroughs's feverish imagination, but it dully ticks off the "adventures" without any thrilling sense of fun. Schenkel is so inattentive to detail that he would have us believe no one raises an eyebrow at the sight of a man morphing into a humongous cobra (not that the Xena-level effects help). It's blandly amusing watching Van Dien plug away ineptly at both his heroics and English accent, though this is ultimately an empty diversion for completists only. --Steve Wiecking

LONG BUCKBY RUGBY: Foster scores try double as Buckby hammer BBOB - Daventry Express

Long Buckby scored seven tries as they returned to form with a bang on Saturday, hammering Northampton Boys Brigade Old Boys 41-15 in Midlands Three East South. With both teams struggling, this was a key survival game, and it was Buckby who came out on top, with Luke Foster scoring a try double. BB got off to a good start as a penalty gave them a 3-0 lead, but on 10 minutes they kicked the ball away for Bucks back row Ben Walton to pick up and drive forward. He fed Luke Foster who in turn gave an indifferent pass to Ed Sitch. Despite the pass, Sitch manged to hang on and ran fully 40 metres beating two men to score in the corner. The Jonny Palmer conversion made it 7-3. By half-time, Buckby’s quick movement and fast recycling put the result beyond doubt. Having won a penalty they kicked for the corner and although BBOB stole the lineout, their kick was charged down for James Hare to score in the corner. Seven minutes later another kick to the corner eventually resulted in a Buckby scrum from which their dominant pack drove over allowing No. 8 Ben Walton to score the home side’s third try. He fed Jake toseland and James Hare was stopped just short of the line. The forwards piled in and hooker Tom Haynes came up with the ball to drive over for the try to make it 22-3. Ten minutes later, Buckby were forced to kick clear. BB kicked back and Sitch showed great strength beating two men before feeding Luke Foster who ran in for a 29-3 half-time lead. By now Buckby were making changes and with his first touch, replacement winger Tom Evans was put in for Buckby’s sixth try putting the match result beyond doubt. Six minutes later Luke Foster who had threatened all afternoon broke the line for his second try, but not to be out done BBOB came back with the last try of the match making the final score 41-15. Buckby have been criticised lately for lack of... However players like Fergus Murray, Dave Wardle and Tim Lewis gave their all and with more performances like this they will be a match for anyone in this league.
