Throw out gradebooks and meet the assessment system of the future!

Mark Barnes’s formula for feedback, titled SE2R (Summarize, Explain, Redirect, Resubmit), has delivered stunning results to the forward-thinking schools that have tried it. The method in this book will loosen and then break your classroom’s dependence on the "A-through-F" grading system that does little more than silence student voices.

Delving into what really motivates students, the book covers:

  • How GPA is a classic example of "the tail wagging the dog"
  • Utilizing mobile devices and social networks to maximize the benefits of SE2R
  • Addressing and overcoming bureaucratic resistance to change

LETTER: Banking licence will allow Mark Barnes to resuscitate the Post Office - BDlive

THE announcement that the South African Post Office (Sapo) has been granted a full banking licence is good news indeed, and will hopefully contribute greatly to new broom Mark Barnes’s successfully resuscitating the perennially ailing institution. Barnes has thus far exhibited flair-filled resolve to restore Sapo to profitability so that it can be a valuable contributor to the economy. His confidence in the Post Office is certainly well founded because it has enormous potential for a successful business model due to its uniquely huge footprint in both urban and the most remote rural localities. The previous Post Office savings bank showed scant intent to gain any substantial market share from the cozy cartel of major banks, was unappealing commercially with its uncompetitive savings interest rates, and highly unlikely to attract a new... Lets hope Barnes follows the example of iconic Afrikaans business giants who formed the highly successful Capitec bank, and previously Jan Marais’ Trust Bank. Those two flair-filled formulas have shown that an alternative creative business model that captures the imagination of the public can successfully challenge the arrogance of the fuddy-duddy status quo. It will need gritty resolve to attract the disgruntled public and small business enterprises back to the Post Office in meaningful numbers, but I am confidant that Barnes has the correct enterprising formula to achieve his goals. Other entrepreneurs, such as Pep’s Christo Wiese, have successfully shown that consumers crave a one-stop shopping experience that includes ancillary services like quality banking and other transactional service necessities at the tills. Pep’s till staff have admirably met the challenge of providing the extra services, and there is no reason the Post Office staff cannot also be adequately upskilled and motivated. As a matter of urgency Post Office foyers need to be transformed into productive and consumer-friendly service centres where clients can sit on a comfortable chair and access computer internet services similar to what is offered in most municipal... Apart from the banking facility and the purchase of vehicle licences, pre-paid electricity purchases, lottery tickets and municipal accounts payments should be available at all Post Offices nationwide so as to attract maximum foot traffic.
