Edith Helen Evans Bruce, a retired Baltimore City schools teacher recalled for her fashion sense, died of pancreatic cancer Feb. The former Windsor Hills and Ashburton resident was 92. Born in Baltimore and raised on West Lafayette Avenue and on Caroline Street, she was the daughter of John Henry Evans, a World War I veteran, and his wife, Drucilla Hill. She attended Booker T. Washington Junior High School and was a 1942 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in education at what is now Coppin State University. Because the state of Maryland did not offer graduate education to African-Americans, Mrs. Bruce commuted to New York City and did postgraduate work at Columbia University. She joined the Baltimore City Department of Education and taught at School 138 in East Baltimore and later at School 144 at Mosher and Wheeler streets in West Baltimore. "My mother told me she had been taught by excellent educators who saw her potential and encouraged her," said her son, Eric Carl Bruce, a Houston resident. "My mother was an energetic, charismatic and inspirational educator to her students. He said she was named a senior teacher and an instructional teacher before her 1992 retirement. She was a congregant at Macedonia Baptist Church and worshipped there throughout her life. Her son said that in her more than 80 years of membership at Macedonia Baptist, she never wavered in her love and support of the church and its outreach programs. She taught Sunday school and directed Macedonia's summer learning program for school children. Bruce also the church a center of her social life. She was a past president of its Ladies Guild and for many years was the chair of its annual fashion show, an event that raised money for the church. She also began a program wherein fellow church members donated their clothing to the church. Bruce belonged to a national organization, Top Ladies of Distinction, who wore pink at their local social events. "My mother appreciated fashion and would coordinate her outfits with her jewelry," said her son. Her son also recalled how his mother took pride in her attire in the classroom and wanted to set an example among her teaching peers. "She loved the city of Baltimore, and in the heyday of the downtown stores, it was nothing for her to shop at all four at Howard and Lexington streets," he said. Source: www.baltimoresun.com
