You knew the Barrymore Awards were back when the people streaming in through the Merriam Theater's front door Monday night were wearing as much makeup as the people on stage. Now restored to full splendor after a year's hiatus, the newly reconfigured awards for outstanding regional theater had promised to share the wealth among large- and small-budget companies. And they did exactly that, with smallish Inis Nua Theatre Company, now in its 11th season, getting the Cinderella treatment. The troupe, which specializes in plays of the British Isles, walked off with five awards, the most for any company. Its Midsummer [a play with songs] , which turned Shakespeare's familiar plot into a modern rom-com, took best musical, best direction of a musical (Kate Galvin), best leading actress in a musical (Liz Filios), and best musical direction (Jamison... Tom Reing, founder and artistic director, attributed some of the lift to the popularity of shows like Downton Abbey , noting, "We're the theatrical counterpart. In the first full ceremony since the 2012 dissolution of Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia - and the first administered by Theatre Philadelphia, which formed to administer the prizes - the award roll call also tallied four for Lantern... Ben Dibble - always a bridesmaid (this was his 12th nomination), seldom a bride (his only previous win was the F. Otto Haas Award for an Emerging Theatre Artist) - finally was presented his first award for best actor in a musical by longtime... The much-praised production - it garnered 15 nominations - won two more awards, for supporting actor Derrick Cobey and supporting actress Kenita Miller. Though it was nominated for best overall production of a musical, its video-rich set design re-creating pre-World War I Atlanta was not. The best-set honor went to Lantern's family show A Child's Christmas in Wales , based on Dylan Thomas' classic and designed with evocative whimsy for the company's small stage by Sebastienne Mundheim. InterAct won the best play award for Down Past. Source: www.philly.com

Peter Weir: Interviews is the first volume of interviews to be published on the esteemed Australian director. Although Weir (b. 1944) has acquired a reputation of being guarded about his life and work, these interviews by archivists, journalists, historians, and colleagues reveal him to be a most amiable and forthcoming subject. He talks about "the precious desperation of the art, the madness, the willingness to experiment" in all his films; the adaptation process from novel to film, when he tells a scriptwriter, "I'm going to eat your script; it's going to be part of my blood!"; and his self-assessment as "merely a jester, with cap and bells, going from court to court." He is encouraged, even provoked to tell his own story, from his childhood in a Sydney suburb in the 1950s, to his apprenticeship in the Australian television industry in the 1960s, his preparations to shoot his first features in the early 1970s, his international celebrity in Australia and Hollywood. An extensive new interview details his current plans for a new film. Interviews discuss Weir's diverse and impressive range of work--his earlier films Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Last Wave, Gallipoli, and The Year of Living Dangerously, as well as Academy Award-nominated Witness, Dead Poets Society, Green Card, The Truman Show, and Master and Commander. This book confirms that the trajectory of Weir's life and work parallels and embodies Australia's own quest to define and express a historical and cultural identity.
