The IPFW baseball team dropped two of three games against Ohio on March 11-12 in Athens, Ohio. They did most of their scoring in the later innings to seal the victory. IPFW started the scoring off with Jonathan Reece driving in Kendall Whitman with a groundout in the second inning. Later in the inning Shannon Baker groundout to second, but Brock Logan scored on the play, giving IPFW an early 2-0 lead. The scoring continued in the third when Whitman singled up the middle to bring around Evan VanSumeren to extend the Mastodon lead to 3-0. The Bobcats did not go away easy. They came back in the fifth and scored a run off an IPFW error. The game came to a standstill for the next three innings when there were no runs scored by either until the top of the ninth. Baker started the inning by doubling down the left field line, and he advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a strikeout by Jackson Boyce, Brandon Soat singled up the middle and Baker advanced 90 more feet to score. Later in the ninth, with Soat on third and VanSumeren on first, Greg Kaiser hit a sacrifice fly out to right field, allowing Soat to score. He then singled to left, scoring Trevino and Van Sumeren to give IPFW a 7-1 lead. Sophomore Evan Miller picked up his second win on the season after he pitched a solid six innings, giving one unearned run and striking out eight Ohio batters. In games two and three IPFW’s offense was unable to muster any runs except for a two-RBI home run by Trevino in the first inning of the second game. Later in game two, the Bobcat’s bats exploded, scoring six runs in the bottom of the third. Tyler Finkler started the third with a single up the middle then worked his way around the bases, stealing second then advancing to third on a wild pitch. Then after a single by Rudy Rott, John Adryan hit a homerun over the left-field fence, plating three runs for Ohio and giving them a 5-2 lead over IPFW. Ohio added insult to injury, scoring one more run in the eighth off an IPFW error. In the final game of the weekend, the game moved along quickly with no runs being put on the board by IPFW, but Ohio scored right off the bat in the first after De Jesus reached.
